” – Christ Answers the Pharisees”

“The Pharisees therefore said unto him, Thou bearest
record of thyself; thy record is not true. Jesus answered and
said unto them, Though I bear record of myself, yet my record
is true: for I know whence I came, and whither I go; but ye
cannot tell whence I come, and whither Igo.” John 8:13-14

Over and over again in John’s Gospel we see the contrast
between Christ, the true Revelation of God, and religion
devoid of revelation. Our verses and those following show
this again.
Christ was accused by the religious Pharisees of bearing
record of Himself (vs. 13). However, Christ could do nothing
else because He is the only full, final revelation of God. There
is no true knowledge but Him. He knew where He was from
and where He was going. They did not (vs. 14). He pointed
out that no judgment is possible apart from Him (vss. 15-16).
But then, Christ did what God always does. He used their own
law that they claimed to believe to show them they were wrong
(vss. 17-18). God uses man’s excuses, man’s claims of
ignorance, etc. to trap them. This is the law of recompence, or
sowing and reaping. What people use to excuse is what will
accuse. What man hides behind will reveal him. What man
evades is what he will face. What anyone runs from he must
meet. We are each our own problem and until we face that,
there is no answer! – H.N.
