| “Discernment” “For the invisible things of him from the creation of theworld are clearly seen, … ” Romans 1:20a To some, “results” mean baptisms, budgets, buildings, nickels, noses, notoriety. The Bible tells us that when we arein the world, we must know who to shun, who to teach, who toawaken and who to follow. Discernment is the answer. May we gain an ever-greater skill and accuracy in readingcharacter in people. May we also detect and identify realtruth. We need to see beneath the surface and correctly “sizeup” a situation. Solomon asked the Lord for discernment in IKings 3:9, thus, “Give therefore thy servant an understandingheart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good andbad: … “ Discernment is a mark of spiritual maturity, for it givesone a proper frame of reference. It acts as an umpire in life andblows the whistle on the spurious. It does not fall for fakes orflirt with phonies, nor does it dance with deceivers or kisscounterfeits goodnight! The Apostle John put it this way:“Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whetherthey are of God: … ” (I John 4:1a). Here is one of the tactics of survival when facing the “fierydarts of the wicked one.” Make certain you have cinched onthe belt of truth tightly around yourself. Truth is what helps usdo battle with the enemy. It also strengthens us in ourrelationships. May the Lord give us all a big dose ofdiscernment today. – D.O. | “At Ease in Our Hearts!” “Woe to them that are at ease in Zion, … for we may notmake mention of the name of the LORD.” Amos 6: 1a & 10b Being ” … at ease in Zion … ” instead of being “alarmedand armed” in Zion is indicative of many churches today andmost Christians in America. God seems to go aboutunrecognized today, as He walks the dark hills of ourdisappointments. He is refused admittance to the deepinequities of what our souls delight in; for we find fun andfavor in the frivolity of life, in a vain search for fame andfortune. Foolishness reigns in our most sacred places insteadof faith. The Lord is as rejected by many, as much perhaps, asthe religious Jews of Jesus’ days on earth, despising Him anddenying His deity. We silently whisper in the deep canyons ofour prideful lives, “We will not have this man to reign overus. ” Like the disciples, who saw and enjoyed the bounty ofChrist feeding the 5,000, thus, realizing there is no need toogreat for our Lord to fill, we display our disinterest, withforgetfulness as they did (see Mark 6:52). There is no excuseor reason to forget the past, when He has met our needs andwill! There is no limit to what He can provide, but we limitHim by our lack of faith (see John 12:37). Friends, there is no danger more subtle than familiarity. We perhaps have become jaded by disappointments or defeatsin the past, and now “just-go-with-the-flow!” Have we become people to just study and not worship?May we get back to being awed by His majesty and in lovewith Him and His work. – T.G.
