Why? – Romans 8:28
“Why?”
“And we know that all things work together for good to
them that love God, to them who are the called according to his
purpose.” Romans 8:28
Young Stephen was in the room adjoining our son during
the early stages of his illness. I befriended him and leaving the
hospital late one night, I felt compelled to enter his room. He
wanted to talk and put his life right with God. He did! The
next morning Stephen died. Later one Wednesday, a
businessman was sitting at our lunch table. Our son, at that
time was in “remission” and also present. About midway
through, our visitor stopped, looked at Timothy and said,
“Tim, because you have suffered with cancer, I have been
saved. Thank you!” I almost burst into tears of joy and praise
to God, for I had led this man to Christ some two months
previously. I can’t describe the expression of happiness that
beamed from our son’s face upon hearing those words. Paul
told the Corinthians that his sufferings had fallen out to their
salvation (cf. II Cor. 1:6). It continues so to this very hour.
In quiet moments of meditation and thoughtfulness over our
son’s terrible experience and sickness, I can see that it’s starting
to make more sense. I can also see purpose and God in many of
the sufferings of my life, even though I have failed my Saviour
so often. Most of the “earthquakes” that crash and smash into
our lives will never be understood in this life. It is during these
difficult times that we must trust, even discipline ourselves to
believe-when we seemingly cannot believe! -R.P.
