The Old Path – Jeremiah 6:16
“The Old Paths”
“Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and
ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein,
and ye shall find rest for your souls … ” Jeremiah 6:16
G. Campbell Morgan (1863-1945) wrote about our text,
“Jeremiah appealed to the past to bear witness, but they would
not attend. He appealed directly to the present, and they
would not hearken.” Never forget, the compromise today is
simply the capitulation of yesteryear.
There are three truths about the present drift that the
Christian can learn from the past desertion. The first truth
about the present drift that the Christian must learn from is the
obvious request: “Thus saith the LORD, stand ye in the ways,
and see ,… ” Three simple words keep the child of God from
being in the dark: declaration, location and observation to
what God desires. Follow the Book, “Thus saith the
LORD ,… ” and you will find the blessing! (see Joshua 1:8).
Another truth about the present drift that the Christian
must learn from is the old road. ” … ask for the old paths,
where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest
for your souls …. Nowhere on the ancient avenue are
contemporary methods or music. Landmarks don’t come with
rollers or wheels (see Pro. 22:28).
A final truth about the present drift the Christian must
learn from is the open rebellion. ” … but they said, we will not
walk therein … ” (16b). Don’t be stupefied when some believers
trade their fundamentalist fighting gear for liberal leisure wear.
The revolt of this moment should only produce more resolve
among many of God’s people. (see Heb. 13:13). – J.H.
