“Filling Jerusalem”

“Saying, Did not we straitly command you that ye should
not teach in this name? and, behold, ye havfilled Jerusalem
with your doctrine, and intend to bring this man’s blood upon
us. Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We
ought to obey God rather than men.” Acts 5:28-29

The apostles had been commanded not to teach in the
name of Jesus Christ. As their hearts were convinced that
obedience to God overrode the will of men, they did not stop to
preach and teach Christ.
We also are commanded to reach our “Jerusalem” with the
news of His resurrection. How many times have we filled the
“Jerusalem” of our homes, work and community with the
news of everything else but the Gospel? We are filling our
“Jerusalem” with earthly delights, instead of doctrine. We
inform our “Jerusalem” of the evening news, with its
hopelessness, rather than the hope of the Gospel. We speak
about the weather more than His work. We talk more of sports
than of His great salvation. Hence, our “Jerusalem” is being
filled with everything but Him.
Would the world say about you, “He is a regular kind of
guy, religious, but not too pushy?” Our goal should be to fill
our “Jerusalem” with doctrine, not delights. What did you fill
the “Jerusalem” of your home, work and community with
recently-eternal life or everyday living?
“And daily in the temple, and in every house, they ceased
not to teach and preach Jesus Christ” (Acts 5:42). – J.O.
