| Consolidating the Holy GhostDr. John M. Asquith 4 min Read 10/27/23 For I long to see you, that I may impart unto you some spiritual gift, to the end ye may be established, Romans 1:11. As we saw in the last installment about the Holy Ghost in Transition, the Holy Ghost was given to the apostles twice. He was breathed into them in John 20, and they were told to tarry for him in Acts 1 and that was fulfilled in Acts 2. If we could be transported back to that time, we would find a few different types of believers. We would find believers such as the 12 disciples of John who encountered the Apostle Paul in Acts 19. They believed what John the Baptist had preached about Jesus Christ. Yet, because the Holy Ghost was not yet given when they believed (John 7:39), and because they were not in the upper room on Pentecost, they never received the Holy Ghost. It took an apostle’s hands for them to receive the Holy Ghost. There were believing Jews in every synagogue visited by the apostles who through faith had believed the promises of God as they had been delivered to them. These same men had brought forth those works that such a faith required. By no means were such men lost and on their way to hell. It’s not like some angel blew a whistle and now suddenly God would no longer honor their faith. Instead, you see the Holy Ghost accompanying the apostles with signs and wonders to convince these believers to trust the gospel of Jesus Christ. Then there were Samaritans who had the gospel preached to them by Philip. Acts 8:14 Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John:Acts 8:15 Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost:Acts 8:16 (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)Acts 8:17 Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost. Why didn’t these people receive the Holy Ghost immediately upon believing? They believed after Jesus Christ was glorified but did not receive the Holy Ghost. It appears that for the purposes of God, these Gentiles could not receive the Holy Ghost upon believing until Peter unlocked that with the laying on of hands. And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven, Matthew 16:19.From the time that Peter unlocked the gift of the Holy Ghost, the Gentiles received the Holy Ghost upon first believing. We see this with Cornelius. And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost, Acts 10:45. Even Peter was amazed. It should not come as a surprise that God would use Peter as a middle man. He has long operated that way. When the Lord spoke to Job’s three friends, he required of them to get Job to intercede for them. Job 42:7 And it was so, that after the LORD had spoken these words unto Job, the LORD said to Eliphaz the Temanite, My wrath is kindled against thee, and against thy two friends: for ye have not spoken of me the thing that is right, as my servant Job hath.Job 42:8 Therefore take unto you now seven bullocks and seven rams, and go to my servant Job, and offer up for yourselves a burnt offering; and my servant Job shall pray for you: for him will I accept: lest I deal with you after your folly, in that ye have not spoken of me the thing which is right, like my servant Job.Job 42:9 So Eliphaz the Temanite and Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite went, and did according as the LORD commanded them: the LORD also accepted Job. We might ask why the Lord didn’t just accept them as he talked to them? For his own purposes he chooses men for such tasks. Likewise as the Lord spoke to Abimelech he required of him to get intercesion through Abraham. Genesis 20:3 But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night, and said to him, Behold, thou art but a dead man, for the woman which thou hast taken; for she is a man’s wife.Genesis 20:4 But Abimelech had not come near her: and he said, Lord, wilt thou slay also a righteous nation?Genesis 20:5 Said he not unto me, She is my sister? and she, even she herself said, He is my brother: in the integrity of my heart and innocency of my hands have I done this.Genesis 20:6 And God said unto him in a dream, Yea, I know that thou didst this in the integrity of thy heart; for I also withheld thee from sinning against me: therefore suffered I thee not to touch her.Genesis 20:7 Now therefore restore the man his wife; for he is a prophet, and he shall pray for thee, and thou shalt live: and if thou restore her not, know thou that thou shalt surely die, thou, and all that are thine. We must accept that for the Lord’s own purposes he placed Peter in a position to unlock the receiving of the Holy Ghost to Gentiles. Once Peter had unlocked that, no Gentile ever again needed a one, two step to receive the Holy Ghost. And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power, Colossians 2:10.Much ado has been made over the seemingly fractured way in which the Holy Ghost was received in the Book of Acts. Cults and heretics have wrested these verses to their destruction. This has been a concise post to explain how the receiving of the Holy Ghost differed as the Book of Acts opened and how his manner of receiving was consolidated to what we have today. Please don’t dismiss these things by using words like “dispensation”. Look for the methods by which the Lord made those transitions. John Asquith•Doctrine•The Holy Ghost |
| An Interlude to Look at the GospelDr. John M. Asquith 6 min read 1 day ago 10/19/23 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures 1st Corinthians 15:3,4. When was it that the Apostle Paul first delivered to the Corinthians “how that Christ died for their sins according to the scriptures”? When did he first show them that Christ was buried and that he rose again the third day? Fortunately the word of God is very clear about that. He did so when he first came to Corinth. He did so before he even named Christ’s name. He labored in the synagogue to convince his hearers what the scriptures said of the coming Christ before he even told them that he knew Christ and who he was. Acts 18:1 After these things Paul departed from Athens, and came to Corinth;Acts 18:2 And found a certain Jew named Aquila, born in Pontus, lately come from Italy, with his wife Priscilla; (because that Claudius had commanded all Jews to depart from Rome:) and came unto them.Acts 18:3 And because he was of the same craft, he abode with them, and wrought: for by their occupation they were tentmakers.Acts 18:4 And he reasoned in the synagogue every sabbath, and persuaded the Jews and the Greeks.Acts 18:5 And when Silas and Timotheus were come from Macedonia, Paul was pressed in the spirit, and testified to the Jews that Jesus was Christ. We cannot get a precise time table for how long the Apostle Paul preached in the synagogue before Silas and Timotheus caught up with him. We do know that Paul had commanded them to leave Berea and to join with him in Athens. We know that those who conducted Paul from Berea to Athens by sea carried back Paul’s command to Silas and Timotheus to come and join him, (Acts 17:15). We know that Paul preached in the synagogue for however long it would take someone to: 1. sail by ship from Athens to Berea,2. find the two disciples,3. for the two disciples to sail to Athens only to find that Paul was not there,4. and the two disciples to travel from Athens to Corinth and find Paul.We can be sure that at the very least it would have taken many weeks, it may have taken months. What was the Apostle Paul doing in the interim? He was preaching in the synagogue every sabbath persuading all who would listen. What was he persuading them about? Acts 18:5 tells us that he did not reveal the name of the promised Messiah (Christ) until Silas and Timotheus arrived. Instead he spent those weeks revealing scriptural facts about the “Christ” that they were expecting. He used the very scriptures that they read every sabbathIf Paul had not yet revealed the identity of the Christ, and if whatever he was preaching in the synagogue needed him to use persuasion, we can be sure it was not the standard fare of teaching in the synagogue. What the Apostle Paul was doing was preparing his listeners in exact accordance with his statements about the law; Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith, Galatians 3:24. But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets, Romans 3:21.The Apostle Paul spent many weeks persuading the Jews and Greek who came to the synagogue about the Christ from within the Old Testament scriptures. He used the same scriptures that Jesus Christ used on the road to Emmaus; And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself, Luke 24:27. He persuaded them with the same verses that Jesus Christ used in Luke 24:44 when he further taught his disciples; And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.You will note that the Apostle Paul spent weeks preaching the death burial and resurrection of the Christ (without revealing who Christ was) by expounding all of the prophets (Acts 3:24, Acts 10:43, Luke 24:27), the Psalms, and Moses. What troubles me in our time is that most American Fundamental King James Blah, Blah, Blah, churches, Baptist and otherwise have become sterile. They exhibit very little evidence of conversions other than their soul winning statistics. Their membership only changes when sea changes occur in surrounding churches. If the average pastor had to confine his ministry to only those he himself found lost and undone without Christ, wooed to a saving knowledge in Christ and then labored over them until Christ was fully formed in them, he would have nothing or almost nothing.Part of the sterility of his church stems from the sterility of his gospel. He has become straightened in his own bowels and sees the gospel as being strictly the death burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ. That is an error. The gospel is the death burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ according to the scriptures. The good Apostle tells us that he used Old Testament scriptures to preach that. Paul did not preach that Jesus did those things. He preached HOW he did those things.Look at our opening verses again. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures Corinthians 15:3, 4. What was the first presentation by the Apostle Paul to the Corinthian people? His first presentation took many weeks of persuading Jews and Greeks out of the Psalms, all of the Prophets and in Moses. He did that without once using any New Testament scriptures. He persuaded men by means of the Old Testament as to what to expect from the Christ. If the average preacher today was asked to preach the death burial and resurrection of the Messiah and to persuade unbelieving Jews and Gentiles well versed in the Old Testament scriptures by revealing the prophecies of the coming Messiah from within their own scriptures, could he last for many weeks? Could he last more than 20 minutes?Could he find the death burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ in the Book of Job?, Jonah?, Habakkuk?, the Psalms of Asaph (a prophet: Matthew 13:35)?, Moses? Could he hold the attention of a well attended synagogue for weeks at a time? If he cannot, he has never preached the gospel in accordance to 1st Corinthians 15:1-4.There are two evangelists currently associated with my church who freely and with great power preach Christ from the Old Testament scriptures. In some churches this has been greeted with a genuine love of the truth. In others they are accused of adding to the gospel. (They are indeed adding to the sterile and powerless gospel preached by many.)The effect of preaching the death burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ according to the scriptures in the same way that the Apostle Paul did has been life. Our church is filled with former drunkards, whores, drug users, Pharisees, and just plain old sinners who have come to Christ, turned their lives around and now raise their families in the house of God. Those churches that have accepted those two evangelists are experiencing genuine conversions. On the other hand, I watch debates on Facebook and other places that remind me of medieval monks arguing over how many angels can fit on the head of a pin. Preachers joust with each other trying to be technically correct over how people get saved. Pastors call these two evangelists and tell them they have added to the gospel while meanwhile their congregations are stifled and never see growth from actual conversions. If the Apostle Paul himself needed weeks of preparatory time to prepare the soil for the seed of the word of God, and if he indeed spent weeks preparing his audience of devout men by grounding them in prophecies of the coming Messiah (Christ) before he revealed Jesus Christ through the foolishness of preaching, do you suppose that might help explain the lack of converts in our churches? You are not preaching the gospel according to 1st Corinthians 15:1-4 if you do not preach from the law to bring men to repentance. If you contact me by email asquithjm@gmail.com I will gladly send you a copy of my book Who Moved the Goal Posts: A Critique of 21st Century Soul winning. | The Holy Ghost in Transition Part IIIDr. John M. Asquith 5 min read 10/11/23 The God of Abraham, and of Isaac, and of Jacob, the God of our fathers, hath glorified his Son Jesus; whom ye delivered up, and denied him in the presence of Pilate, when he was determined to let him go, Acts 3:13. In our last section we saw that the Holy Ghost had not yet been given because that Jesus Christ had not yet been glorified (John 7:39). A transition took place when Jesus Christ was glorified. Note: that is not the same as the beginning of the new testament. The New Testament began when the testator died; For a testament is of force after men are dead: otherwise it is of no strength at all while the testator liveth, Hebrews 9:17.Jesus Christ was not glorified when he died. He was glorified after he resurrected; Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God, John 20:17. These things understood not his disciples at the first: but when Jesus was glorified, then remembered they that these things were written of him, and that they had done these things unto him, John 12:16. (Speaking of the Holy Ghost) He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you, John 16:14.I make this point because common dispensational theory tends to lump changes in God’s relationship and dealing with men as if a sudden shift in time had happened that they label a dispensation. It’s as if an angel leaned out from heaven and blew a whistle. In reality, there are transitions in the bible. Each transition will have a specific cause and effect. It is important for the student of God’s word to be able to understand these transitions and understand the mechanics of what happened. All to often they are swept under the big rug of dispensationalism. As a result students miss what happened to cause the transition. The Apostles received the Holy Ghost twice. By studying each occurrence we can better understand how the Holy Ghost operates today and how he will operate during the tribulation. 1st: John 20:21 Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you.John 20:22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost:John 20:23 Whose soever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and whose soever sins ye retain, they are retained. 2nd: Acts 1:4 And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me.Acts 1:5 For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence. Clearly, the disciples received the Holy Ghost in John 20:22. By being given the Holy Ghost they were given apostolic powers. They were allowed to remit sins. We can see a couple of examples of this. To whom ye forgive any thing, I forgive also: for if I forgave any thing, to whom I forgave it, for your sakes forgave I it in the person of Christ, 2nd Corinthians 2:10.The Corinthian Church was one of the most obviously transitional churches of the New Testament with the gifts of knowledge, tongues and of prophecy being active in their assembly. The Apostle Paul made it clear that he exercised the gifts of an apostle among them; Truly the signs of an apostle were wrought among you in all patience, in signs, and wonders, and mighty deeds, 2nd Corinthians 12:12.Peter used that power when he baptized those in the crowd who had repented of crucifying their Messiah. Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost, Acts 2:38. Keep in mind that a great transition is taking place. Peter was clearly told that; whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven, Matthew 16:19.You can be sure that each and every one of the Jews who truly repented of crucifying their Messiah and who humbled themselves to be publicly baptized in the name of the same man who they wanted crucified about 6 weeks earlier, had their sins remitted and they received the gift of the Holy Ghost. You can also be sure that they did not receive the Holy Ghost in the same manner that a believer who repents and receives Jesus Christ receives the Holy Ghost today. Please do not be deceived into thinking that just any old person who submitted to Peter’s baptism received grace. Grace is now, and always has been undeserved favor from God. At no time ever has God ever given grace to people because of some work that they performed. What does change from time to time as transitions take place are the works that God requires of those who truly believe. You are witnessing through the scripture the working of an apostolic ministry with apostolic powers and gifts. You are witnessing the working of the Holy Ghost in men during a transition. You are witnessing the same relationship between the Holy Ghost and believers which will be on this earth during the great tribulation. All too often people are unable to distinguish the difference in the work of the Holy Ghost during the tribulation and the work of Holy Ghost today. There is a difference and the scriptures make that clear. In our next section we will look at the Day of Pentecost and how the Holy Ghost transitioned in how men received him and what that meant to them. We will also see that there was a long period of time in which the Holy Ghost operated differently in two distinct different groups of people as the apostles sought to bring the remnant of believing Jews into harmony the how the Holy Ghost intended to operate from that time until the tribulation. We saw that with the 12 disciples of John the Baptist who needed an apostolic laying on of hands to receive the Holy Ghost. Obviously, there are no people alive today who believed on Jesus Christ prior to him being glorified. Obviously, there is no one with apostolic power to remit sins or to lay on hands to give the Holy Ghost. If a man today has Jesus Christ, he has the Holy Ghost. He is the multivitamin. And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power, Colossians 2:10. The Holy Ghost•Doctrine•John Asquith |
| The Holy Ghost in Transition Part IIDr. John M. Asquith 7 min read 10/9/23 When we reach the pages of the New Testament, we see that the Holy Ghost is no longer hidden behind the scenes. We see that he is plainly spoken of and we see him working towards the birth of Jesus Christ. Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost, Matthew 1:18.But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost, Matthew 1:20.Matthew 1:20 is the first time ever recorded wherein the term “Holy Ghost” is spoken to anyone. Until then, the third person in the Godhead has worked in the affairs of men but had never been revealed in his own name. From that point on, he will be openly named. John the Baptist freely spoke of the Holy Ghost. I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire, Matthew 3:11.To get an idea of the subtle difference between the terms “Spirit of God” and “Holy Ghost”, look at the four places describing what happened when John baptized Jesus Christ. . And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him, Matthew 3:16. And straightway coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon him, Mark 1:10. And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him, John 1:32. And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased, Luke 3:22. Notice that in the first three accounts we are told what John saw. He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove. It is told through John’s eyes. In Luke’s account, we see it as it is. We do not see it through John’s eyes, we are plainly told that the Holy Ghost descended. By this we can see that the term “Spirit of God” and Holy Ghost are almost synonymous. To understand the term “Spirit of God”, think of the bible definition of God. God is the eternal being who is revealed to us as three persons who can act independently of one another, but who coexist in perfect harmony of purpose and being. The Spirit of God is the Spirit of their union. If we examine the seven Spirits of God through the any of the three persons in the Godhead, we will see three distinctly different sets of seven names. If the seven Spirits of God are examined through the person of the Father, they will illustrate works of the Father such as the Spirit of adoption (Romans 8:15). Likewise, when the Seven spirits of God are examined through the working of Jehovah God, the creator, they bear seven other titles but use a lowercase “s” to identify themselves such as “the spirit of faith”, (2nd Corinthians 4:13). The Spirit of God is associated with the Holy Ghost and is nearly synonymous. When the term “Spirit of God” is used it is the Holy Ghost acting for the entire Godhead. We must not think of God as if he was a muddle of three persons trying to exercise one title. As God he reigns supreme. Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth, Psalm 46:10. There is a perfect unity in the Godhead so that the three can and often operate as one.All too often people mistake the Godhead for the Father. In a King James Bible, the Father is a distinct person within the Godhead. We give thanks to God and the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you, Colossians 1:3.Almost all other versions change that to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. In doing so they erase the Father as a distinct person. There are at least five more places (Galatians 1:4, Ephesians 5:20, 1st Thessalonians 4:13, James 1:27) in the King James Bible wherein the Father is distinguished as a person in his own right and dwelling in the Godhead. It is the Father to whom the other two persons look to for direction. Jehovah God does the work, and the Holy Ghost empowers the work and keeps it pure. That the Spirit of God is named in the Gospels is nothing new to the bible. What is new is that the Holy Ghost is named. His working in the birth of Jesus Christ is revealed. He is revealed in the prophecy of being baptized with the Holy Ghost and with fire. He is revealed as having told Simeon about the coming Christ. And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord’s Christ, Luke 2:26.Throughout the gospels we see the Holy Ghost exercising his great ministry of manifesting Jesus Christ. We see that his person and holiness is such that to blaspheme him was unpardonable. And whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but unto him that blasphemeth against the Holy Ghost it shall not be forgiven, Luke 12:10. We also learn that he was not yet given to men in the manner to which he is given in the New Testament. (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.), John 7:39.He was not yet given because a transition needed to take place. Just as Jesus told Philip that the Father was with him; Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?, John 14:9; he also said that the Holy Ghost was there also. John 14:16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;John 14:17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.John 14:18 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. Notice in verse 17 that Jesus says that the Holy Ghost is currently dwelling with them, but shall be in them. That verse led to the canard often quoted by preachers of old that in the Old Testament the Holy Spirit came upon people, but in the New Testament the Holy Spirit is in you. Verses that contradict that are numerous throughout the Old Testament and identify the spirit as being within men many times, but false teachings once they take root are difficult to expunge (1st Peter 1:11, Exodus 31:3, Nehemiah 9:30 as examples).Instead, the Holy Ghost is currently with them in the same way that the Father is with them. The flesh of Jesus Christ is composed of all that is God; For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell, Colossians 1:9. For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily, Colossians 2:9. Wherever Jesus Christ dwelt, the Holy Ghost dwelt. Jesus Christ explained that to his disciples when he said, I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you, vs 18.Simply put, a transition was needed before men could receive the Holy Ghost as he is received today. As John 7:39 had said, the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus Christ was not yet glorified. Jesus spoke of that coming in more than one place. John 14:25 These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you.John 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. John 16:7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.John 16:8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:John 16:9 Of sin, because they believe not on me;John 16:10 Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;John 16:11 Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.John 16:12 I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now.John 16:13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.John 16:14 He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you. Jesus Christ spoke of a future ministry of the Holy Ghost. A transition was coming. We will see that the Apostles were given the Holy Ghost twice. In our next section we will explore that and by doing so will learn much. The English of the Text•John Asquith•Doctrine |
| The Holy Ghost in Transition Part I (purecambridgetext.com) Dr. John M. Asquith 4 min read 10/4/23 The Holy Ghost in Transition Part I Part 1: The Holy Ghost IncognitoIt may seem odd to think of the Holy Ghost in transition. After all, isn’t he God? Yes, the Holy Ghost is one of three distinct persons who are God. The word of God describes this phenomenon as “The Godhead”. Acts 17:29 Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man’s device.Romans 1:20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:Colossians 2:9 For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. Within the Godhead resides a distinct personality who is identified in the word of God as the Father. He is a person in every sense of the word. He is the person in the Godhead who makes the plans. His will is all important to the other two members of the Godhead and it should be to us. Also within the Godhead is the person of Jehovah God who is the creator. He is the person who was made flesh and of whom the gospels and epistles bear witness. Both the Father and Jehovah God are identifiable as distinct persons in the Old Testament. For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite one, Isaiah 57:15.The third person named and described in our bible is the Holy Ghost. As English speakers we have an advantage over many languages. In most languages the terms Holy Spirit and Holy Ghost are the same. This has led to some confusion in distinguishing when the Third Person of the Godhead is singled out as a distinct person and when the term spirit is describing a working of the Godhead. For example, And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters, Genesis 1:2. In this passage the common Spirit called the Spirit of God shared by all of the Godhead moved upon the waters. We know that there are seven Spirits of God, (Rev. 1:4, 3:1, 4:5, 5:6). Throughout the word of God those seven Spirits manifest themselves many ways and with many titles but should not be confused with the Holy Ghost. All Germanic tongues use the term Holy Ghost in one form or another. For example, Anglo Saxon used the term “Halig Geist”. It is unique to Germanic tongues such as Dutch, German, Afrikaans, and English (which is a Germanic Tongue). For readers in these languages the work of distinguishing between a spiritual working of God and the person of the Holy Ghost is done for them. With that being understood, the term Holy Ghost is never used in the Old Testament. We will see that he worked throughout the Old Testament but was never singled out and named. For those who are still having trouble separating the terms Holy Spirit and Holy Ghost, think about the twelve disciples of John the Baptist who the Apostle Paul met outside of the synagogue in Ephesus. Paul acknowledged that they believed; He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed?, Acts 19:2a. Their response says a lot; And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost, Acts 19:2b.Is it feasible that anyone could have been a disciple of John the Baptist, traveled in a group of 12 men who apparently visited synagogues, and yet never opened the scriptures? If what Paul asked them about was the general term Holy Spirit or Spirit of God, how could any person who was even vaguely familiar with the Hebrew scriptures not be aware of that? But, if the Apostle Paul was speaking of a distinct person who had begun openly ministering to believers but was never called out by name in that Old Testament, their answer makes perfect sense. To understand this study and to understand the work of the Holy Ghost as he transitioned how he operated in the affairs of men it is necessary to believe that a King James Bible is perfect and that every word means exactly what it says. In the Old Testament we are told that the Holy Ghost was the author or moving force in giving us scripture But, he worked behind the scenes and was never manifest as an individual person in the same way that the Father and Jehovah God were manifest. Hebrews 3:7 Wherefore (as the Holy Ghost saith, To day if ye will hear his voice,Hebrews 3:8 Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness:Hebrews 3:9 When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my works forty years.Hebrews 3:10 Wherefore I was grieved with that generation, and said, They do alway err in their heart; and they have not known my ways.Hebrews 3:11 So I sware in my wrath, They shall not enter into my rest.)The Apostle Paul quoted the 95th Psalm. By every appearance it is a typical psalm written by a prophet of that day, and yet Paul said that he was quoting the Holy Ghost. Indeed he was. The Apostle Peter explained that when he said; For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost, 2nd Peter 1:21.In our King James Bible the Holy Ghost is part of the Godhead. He is a distinct person in his own right. He worked throughout the Old Testament but was never outright named so that a person confined to only the Old Testament would not be able to single him out. We will see that as the Gospel record of Jesus Christ unfolds, the work and presence of the Holy Ghost makes a transition. The Grace Bible Baptist Independent Church of Shinglehouse, PA is one of the truly great churches in our area. Their Pastor, Phil Seely, a relatively young man recently sent me the following study that he had done. Being in my late 60s and noting that so many of those who defend the integrity of our bible are of similar age or older, I rejoice to see these younger men who have learned to trust the words of their bible and who strive to teach their people accordingly. | Stript by Document ControlStript by Document Control (purecambridgetext.com)Cory Jackson 9/26/23 3 min read Genesis 37:23 “And it came to pass, when Joseph was come unto his brethren, that they stript Joseph out of his coat, his coat of many colours that was on him;” Our young preacher Cory Jackson strikes again with some excellent research… There it is. The only time the word “stript” appears in the King James Bible. Why is it spelled that way? Why is it not spelled “stripped”? After all, the word “stripped” is in the Bible 12 times. Why should this one word in Genesis 37:23 be different from the others? Pondering this brought me back to my days of being a Document Control Specialist in Dallas, Texas. My job was to ensure that the documents, records and work specifications of the company were accurate, maintained and approved by the authorized personnel. Not only did the general information contained in these documents need to be accurate, but the spelling of every word in the documents needed to be correct as well. This job required attention to detail. There are few things worse than a surprise audit from the FDA, in which they inspect a document that is found to have multiple spelling errors. Ouch! How unprofessional! Spelling matters. In matters in the workforce. And it certainly does not matter any less when it comes to the Word of God. In fact, we could certainly contend that it matters even more! The word “stript” in Genesis 37:23 is a verb. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, there are two definitions of “stript” when it is used as a verb. Stript, variant of strip: To denude (a thing) of its covering, esp. (a tree) of its bark, (a seed) of its skin, (a fruit) of its rind.Stript, variant of stripe: To ornament (cloth, a garment) with narrow pieces of material or with stripes of colour. This word, as it is used in Genesis 37:23, seems to be a combination of both of these definitions. Joseph’s brethren were taking off a covering, which is consistent with the first definition listed. But notice that the second definition listed is a variant of the word “stripe”. And it has to do with narrow pieces of material of stripes of colour. The Bible description of Joseph’s coat is that it was a “coat of many colours.” This was certainly made from more than one piece of material. It was made from many, narrow pieces of material. This would form stripes. So when Joseph’s brethren took off his coat, they were taking off something that had stripes on it. According to a King James Bible, when you strip off something that has stripes, it has not been stripped, it has been stript. God gave the King James translators the wisdom to understand this. The chances are pretty good that they knew grammar and language better than any Document Control Specialist or any scholar alive today. And they chose to use the word “stript” here.If a business or a government agency goes to such great lengths to pay attention to detail in record keeping, how much more is our God capable of giving us a record in which every detail is exactly the way he wants it to be? The Holy Ghost is satisfied with the interpretation of this word, and since he is, Ishould be too. It’s interesting to note in Matthew 27:28, Jesus was “stripped” of His raiment. He was not “stript”. What does that tell us? His clothing did not have stripes. It wasn’t bright and flashy or designed to get attention. It was common, plain clothing. Does that not fit the description given of the Saviour in Isaiah 53:2? “For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.”I believe the King James Bible is perfect, not just in its doctrine, and not just in its words, but in its spelling of those words too. I did not begin to notice little nuances of spelling in the Bible, until I believed that it was indeed, a perfect Book. And once I saw nuances in spelling, I realized we can learn doctrinenot only from the words of a King James Bible, but also from how those words are spelled. Only God could write such a Book.
