Are You A Fleshly Leach?
“Are You A Fleshly Leach?”
“The horseleach hath two daughters, crying, Give, give.
There are three things that are never satisfied, yea, four things
say not, It is enough:” Proverbs 30:15
Just a quick reminder, the horseleach (we spell it
horseleech) is a bloodsucker that attaches to the inside of a
horse’s mouth that might be in the water it is drinking.
Now to the thought! Notice that this leech is crying,
“give … give,” and the reason is simply that she is not getting
enough to satisfy her taste. As a boy we used to swim in the
local creek, just south of our church. And yes, it was
cold–but once you turn blue, who cared? Smile! We often
would get a leech or two attached to a leg, and we would
physically remove it because we knew it would never get
enough blood and let go.
I have always thought it strange that people, like leeches,
never get enough money, excitement, sporting events, toys to
play with, and on goes the list. However, they cry, “Don’t
preach over thirty minutes, Pastor. I just can’t handle it!”
Also, I have never seen anyone run up to an usher and say, “I
didn’t give enough. Here’s some more money!” I’ve never
known anyone say, “Pastor, I need to give more to missions.”
I believe my point is clear. We are leeches for that which feeds
our flesh, but we’ve had enough preaching, Bible-reading,
good Gospel singing, soul-winning … you get the point! -P.H.
