A Look At The Master” (A Rebuke Of Carnality & Covetousness) – Luke 12:13
A Look At The Master” (A Rebuke Of Carnality & Covetousness)
“And one of the company said unto him, Master, speak to
my brother, that he divide the inheritance with me.”
Luke 12:13
One of the most impactful statements that came from the
lips of our Lord is found in the 15″ verse: ” … a man’s life
consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he
possesseth. “ Christ then laid out the parable of a man who
thought he had almost everything, and in his mind, was on the
brink of getting it all! (vss. 16-21).
The parable is perhaps the “bio” of many of the movers
and shakers in today’s society. Things have corroded the
hearts and corrupted the minds of many who are “one of the
company.” They grasp at inheritances, shady business deals
and outright scams to bilk others in ways unimaginable when I
was a boy, let alone in Bible days! Beware!
In verses 20 & 21, the end result of the avarice is the “just
deserts” of the covetous. Men desire to build temples of
finance here and worship the almighty dollar, forgetting that
life is not constructed on cash, credit cards, cash registers or
castles in one’s mind. The contrast is illuminated in verse
twenty-one as “treasure for himself,” thus, being rich in
houses and lands, but impoverished in God’s eyes and
eternity’s commodities “is not rich toward God.” In verse 20,
the fool did not realize that after carousing the night before (vs.
19), this would be his last gasp at life! Friend, one night “thy
soul shall be required of thee.” -T.G.
