It wasn’t just Baptist preachers who were persecuted in Colonial America. Baptist laymen also suffered. Consider the example of Thomas Waford, a member of the Williams Baptist Church in Goochland County, Virginia. When his pastor John Waller and other men were determined to preach in new areas, Waford would go before them preparing the way. He would find a suitable location for them to hold services and then announce the meeting throughout the area. On one such occasion in Essex County, Virginia in December 1774, he was arrested and taken before the local magistrate. His saddlebags were searched for “treasonable papers.” The below picture illustrates this event. Because Waford wasn’t actually preaching, he was released by the magistrate. Events such as these remind us to be thankful for the religious liberty Baptists have in America and to take advantage of these freedoms to preach the gospel to those around us.
