John Spittlehouse (1612-1659?) was born in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, England. A supporter of Oliver Cromwell, he fought in several battles in the English Civil War, and was eventually appointed as deputy to the Marshal-General in charge of military security.
Spittlehouse wrote a number of books, including “𝗔 𝗩𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘂𝗲𝗱 𝗦𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗼𝗳 𝗝𝗲𝘀𝘂𝘀 𝗖𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗡𝗼𝘄 𝗦𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗹𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗹𝘆 𝗧𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗱 𝗔𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘀 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗨𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲” published with John More in 1652. In this book Spittlehouse writes:

Notice in this quote you have a primary source from an early 17th century English Baptist declaring:
1) Pedobaptist (i.e. those that baptize infants) congregations are not true New Testament churches.
2. That the “Primitive Church” had been “preserved” and had “continued unto this present time” and could be identified with those “scandalously termed Anabaptists.”
Sadly, Spittlehouse is totally ignored by most modern Baptist historians. Thankfully his book has been reprinted in modern English with an excellent introduction and sells for only $6! https://wipfandstock.com/…/a-vindication-of-the…/
The picture below is from the frontispiece to Spittlehouse’s 1650 book ” Rome ruin’d by White Hall” and shows the Baptist preacher (Spittlehouse?) contending against an Anglican prelate, the Pope, and a Presbyterian elder.
