“Following Christ”
“Following Christ”
“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they
follow me.” John 10:27
Seventeen times (if I counted right) Jesus Christ asked or it
is stated that following Him is the greatest activity one could
be engaged in. The vast enterprise of evangelizing the world
should be the paramount activity of a follower of Jesus Christ.
In our text today, it is not a request, but a statement of fact
that those that belong to Him, should follow Him! Where He
often leads, it is not always warm and cozy; sometimes it is
cold and lousy! The Christian walk is often times a clear, plain
path. Other times it is like a minefield and the explosions
nearly or successfully claim their intended target. It is not all
picking daisies; it is often encountering and dealing with
“doozies.” However, to follow Him is no fool’s errand; it is a
blessed privilege to walk in companionship and camaraderie
with Christ Jesus. Often it is like working a puzzle with the
pieces upside-down! Only God can help us!
The fellowship with other faithful followers also cushions
the blows of the trials and heartaches. Strewn along the way
are brothers born for the days of adversity. Along the trail or
motor way, there are signs to guide the way. How about this
one-“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God,
that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable
unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not
conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the
renewing of your mind ,… ” (Romans 12:1 & 2a). The little
Sunday school song said it well: “Follow, follow, I will follow
Jesus … follow Jesus anywhere!” Pretty good advice, if you
ask me. – T.G.
