“A Burning Testimony”

“If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God
destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.”
I Corinthians 3:17

I read an article called “Ten Reasons Why I Smoke.” (1)
Because it’s such a clean and refined habit. (2) It makes my
breath so pleasing to everybody. (3) It sets such a good
example for children to follow. (4) It proves that I have great
self-control. (5) It makes my fingers and teeth so pretty and
yellow. (6) It makes me look so tough and manly. (7) I love to
spit, and gag and cough. (8) It starts fires, kills people, and
destroys millions of dollars’ worth of forests and property. (9) I
want to see how much poison my body can take before I die.
(10) It’s my way of obeying God, who says, “Keep thyself
pure, ” and “Touch not the unclean thing.”
There is no good reason to burn up money while you kill
yourself and ruin your testimony. I know some good people
that smoke, and they’re as saved as I am. But I think they have a
lost testimony. I think they have wasted their influence. I
think they’re injuring their health. I think they are grieving the
Holy Ghost of God. They’re shortening their lives.
I remember Curtis Hutson telling the story about the
county preacher that got up and preached against smoking. As
he closed the service a little old lady came up with a chaw of
tobacco in her mouth and said, “That’s right, Preacher. I think
it’s a terrible sin to burn something that tastes so good.” You
can smile now and quit smoking and chewing! -D.C.
