Every time I post something about women’s roles as taught in the Bible, I always get the same response from at least one person. “Why do you pick on women, show what the Bible says about the man’s role too.” When I first started preaching I found that there are three passages that list the roles of men and women. They all present the roles in the same order. Ephesians 5:22-33, Colossians 3:18-20, and 1 Peter 3:1-7 all begin with the woman’s role first.

Every time I post something about women’s roles as taught in the Bible, I always get the same response from at least one person. “Why do you pick on women, show what the Bible says about the man’s role too.”

I understand where they are coming from. When I first started preaching I found that there are three passages that list the roles of men and women. They all present the roles in the same order. Ephesians 5:22-33, Colossians 3:18-20, and 1 Peter 3:1-7 all begin with the woman’s role first. As a young, idealistic preacher, I presented the man’s role first because I felt that his was the most responsible role. It took me a few years to realize that I was tampering with God’s Word unjustly. I repented and sought God for the right way and for the reason that He listed the woman’s role first.

I learned that women have a tremendous power in marriage and family relationships greater than they imagine. Also, that a man cannot lead if there is no one to follow. Most importantly, I discovered that a woman’s role in marriage and family is directly connected to God, before her husband is affected. It is God who designed gender roles and it is He to whom each of us are accountable.

Conclusion: I have, since that discovery, always presented the woman’s role first. I hope to have a post about men’s roles soon. I expect a good amount of criticism on this one also. 😀25You, John Whitten, Jesse Schorle and 22 others6 Comments14 Shares
