Taylor These were part of a series on Virginia Baptist Ministers- This does get a little confusing. The first two volumes were written by James B Taylor- I believe the first edition came out in 1837 making it roughly contemporary with Semple’s history (although that was later updated) This became the first volume. The second volume came out in 1859 and this covered ministers who had died up to that point. These two are generally sold as a set. Thereafter (somewhat confusingly) George Braxton Taylor then took up the mantle and wrote volumes 3-6. I have seen a CD online offering vol 1-5 and crediting all to George……This series of brief biographies follows a format similar to the Baptist Encyclopedia giving a short synopsis of the lives and ministry of many preachers. This history is very useful not just in Virginia Baptist history research but in many other states. Many of the biographies detail the migration to Kentucky (at first Kentuck County Virginia) as well into the western counties that would become West Virginia in the Civil War. From Kentucky Baptists would spread into the Midwest and further.
