The War of the Regulation Part eleven- another proclamation May 24th

While encamped as an occupying force at Sandy Creek Tryon issued at least two proclamations. The Colonial Records preserves the one from the 24th. He gave the people little time to comply with his demands- and there is note of the badness of the weather. (one can not help but think that God was making these troops encamped at Sandy Creek miserable in the weather for what they were doing) He extends the time to surrender until the 30th but it is of note that he would have already moved on by that time crossing the Uwharrie (South of what is now High Point, NC) on either the 27th or 28th. Proclamation by William Tryon concerning a pardon for rioters Whereas through the badness of the weather many persons who have stood out in Rebellion and live in remote parts have not been able to surrender themselves and deliver up their Arms agreeable to my Proclamations of the 17th and 21st Inst. I have thought fit by and with the advice and consent of His Majesty’s Council to extend the time limited in the said Proclamations to the Thirtieth Instant inclusive and allow a Pardon to all those who shall comply with the Terms in my Proclamation of the seventeenth Instant—Outlaws and Prisoners excepted.Given under my Hand and the Seal of the Province at Sandy Creek Camp this twenty fourth day of May A. Dom. 1771.Wm. TRYON. God save the King As a note- touring Sandy Creek is a must do. The old building here is from 1808 and replaced the original after it burned. The original would have been located on the corner of the property by the cemetery and is marked by a monument. (This would have been to the right of the picture in the last post.) I just wanted to include these pictures as well as the marker for Herman Husband’s house which was a little over a mile north. Considering Tryon’s hatred for the Baptists and Herman Husband’s proximity it is not surprising that this tyrant would take over the grounds of Sandy Creek.
