Travels In Baptist History 26Jesse BushyheadLocated across the road from the Baptist Mission Church (part 25) is the cemetery where Jesse Bushyhead, a remarkable Cherokee Baptist preacher is buried. Jesse Bushyhead (1804-1844) (Cherokee name Unaduti) was saved and baptized in 1830. He would become an evangelist among the Cherokee. He also established and pastored a church at Amohee Tennessee. He would work closely with missionary Evan Jones (his story is coming in part 27) among the Cherokee. While Evan Jones would preach in English, Bushyhead would translate to Cherokee. In 1832 He was appointed as assistant missionary By the Baptist Board of Foreign Missions. Bushyhead would lead a group of 950 over the trail of tears with 38 deaths and 6 births along the way. One of his daughters Eliza would die along the trail. His group however fared much better than others. He would later become the Chief Justice of the Cherokee Nation. He would go to be with the Lord after a sudden illness on July 17, 1844. His eldest son Dennis Bushyhead would be principal Chief from 1879 to 1887.
