I guess we as Baptists must like to eat more than we love history! Well I had to chuckle as these were listed as cookbooks…….
Irony aside I had been keeping an eye out for further volumes of this series- I reviewed a reprint of volume 1&2 in part 13 of this series. https://www.facebook.com/groups/baptistchurchhistory/posts/1457657091096102/ The first two volumes of this series were written by James B Taylor and I had them as a reprint from Local Church Bible Publishers. The subsequent volumes were written somewhat confusingly by George Braxton Taylor. I managed to pick up volumes 4 and 6 recently by George Braxton Taylor. The series is set up roughly in a chronological order with each book covering a specific time period with the date by the death of the preacher. (Links are further down to electronic copies) The books are brief biographical sketches- about a page or two very similar to the Baptist Encyclopedia. It is to be noted that Virginia is important to most other Baptist history in the US as preachers went from Virginia everywhere in the first westward and later expansions. It is interesting to compare James’ and George’s writings on the subject. James takes a rather matter of fact, blunt, pull no punches style whereas George is more diplomatic. I have just started reading volume 4 and am about 40 or so pages in and am enjoying it. Fortunately the books are available in electronic format where you can download in several formats or read online.Volume 1 James B Taylor https://archive.org/details/virginiabaptistm01taylVolume 2 James B Taylor https://archive.org/details/virginiabaptistm02taylVolume 3 George Braxton Taylor (along with subsequent volumes) 1860-1886 https://archive.org/details/virginiabaptis1912tayl Volume 4 1885-1902 https://archive.org/details/virginiabaptis1913taylVolume 5 1902-1914 https://archive.org/details/virginiabaptistm00taylrichVolume 6 1914-1934 https://archive.org/details/virginiabaptistm00tayl_1
