“Being A Witness”

“A true witness delivereth souls: but a deceitful witness speaketh lies.” Proverbs 14:25

“Perhaps we need to define the job or duty of a witness because we all seem to forget. I’m not sure who said the following, but I believe it will be definition enough. “Too many teachers and preachers think they are called to be lawyers for Christ instead of witnesses for Him. Just testifying concerning the things you know about Him.” Simply put, our duty is not to defend Christ, rather to tell the world about Him.

There are two kinds of witnesses, those that speak falsely and those that speak the truth. Moses instructed the people in Deuteronomy 5:20, “Neither shalt thou bear false witness against thy neighbour:” That is, you are not to testify to things you don’t know for sure, or that you’ve heard from someone else. But more so, perhaps many have been a false witness more by how they lived than what they said, hence the point of our verse. Many a true witness has been destroyed by the visible deceitful witness of the same person. How many preachers reading this devotion have had someone convey to you, that they have been cheated or lied to by someone in your church?

The duty of a witness, whether on the witness stand or on the street, is to provide the truth. Keep in mind, my friends, it is our duty to deliver those caught in the clutches of sin and the devil, the truth from God’s Word. How many souls has our witness delivered or turned away?” — P. H.
