“Far Above Rubies” “Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies. ” Proverbs 31:10

The word virtuous means to be multifaceted True virtue integrates truth into all areas of life. Notice:

HER PRAGMATISM: She is practical in carrying out responsibility. The whole chapter so indicates.

HER PURITY: Purity is not an isolated virtue. It applies to all areas of life. Her husband can safely trust her (vs. 11). Her personal faithfulness (vs. 12) and fitness are classic (vs. 25).

HER PERFORMANCE: Every aspect of her life is controlled by her character. She does what is “good” for the entire family (vss. 12 & 18). She uses wisdom in a wide range of endeavors (vs. 14). She is willing to serve her family, the poor, the needy and her own servants (vss. 20-22). She is constantly promoting a way for her husband to excel (vs. 12). She is also careful about her use of words (vs. 26).

HER PRAISE: In verses 27-31, we find her being praised: for her ways in the household, and for her untiring performance in doing so. Her praise comes from several sources: her children, her husband, and her Lord. Under direction from the Holy Spirit, the writer says what God has thought of her: she is excellent in virtues, choices, and, therefore, rewards. She is far above rubies. Solomon also wrote, “Whoso findeth a wife findeth a good thing, and 4 obtaineth favour of the LORD.” (Pro. 18:22) If you’ve found her—thank God! If not, keep looking and if you are a lady, be that “good thing,” a virtuous woman. — G.G.
