Recent Question: What are the best church history books? 5/10/22
An Answer: Jim Curran Admin 05/10/2022

Remember church history should be Baptist history- the other stuff falls into false doctrine to some extent or another. Above under featured there is a list of free books you can download- There are many selections free for the downloading- also if you click under “topics” there is a bibliography there- this includes works that are in print only as well.

To start- how about a starter work- the Trail of Blood is a little pamphlet that gives a very basic overview- it is by no means comprehensive.

Another starter work that I recommend is “Faithful Baptist Witness” by Phil Stringer this is in print only. He did this as a basic introduction to get into people’s hands. Another short work is Orchard’s Baptist History.

To get into larger works I would recommend JT Christian’s Baptist History. DB Ray’s Baptist Succession is also very good. Thomas Armitage also has an excellent one but it is a pretty big read in two volumes.

The best American Baptist History book is hands down “America in Crimson Red” by Beller- excellent book you will have trouble putting it down. It is in print only from Prairie Fire Press. This is just a few basic ideas- the Bibliographies have many more with notes.

TO OUR FRIENDS AROUND THE WORLD.
Some great resources for you. I know we have a lot of requests on where to find books and I know the need really is great around the world for pastors to have good materials. Often those are unobtainable or unaffordable. We are blessed in America to have a lot of bookstores but being honest the average Christian bookstore here is a minefield filled with false doctrine. Many of the good books are older. If you look under announcements there is an extensive list of FREE books that you can get online.

https://www.facebook.com/…/permalink/1107485922779889/ In addition there are other posts there that list resources for finding and ordering books. I thought I would also mention a couple of other resources for getting Free commentaries (I would suggest Matthew Henry’s commentaries, Barnes Notes, Spurgeon’s Treasury of David for the Psalms and the Pulpit Commentary) www.archive.org has all of these for free online. Just search by title or author. Another resource is www.onlinebible.net (You might need to go to www.onlinebible.org as net is labeled North America) They have an electronic Bible available for free for download on PC Android or Apple. The starter pack comes with KJV and some other resources. (I like the fact that they don’t give you a lot of the junk new translations with the download like a lot of other electronic versions do) Barnes and Matthew Henry and other resources are also available for free and you can download Bibles in different languages (they do have a lot of Textus Receptus based Bibles) I hope these are a blessing.
FREE BAPTIST HISTORY BOOKS-
Acquiring Baptist History books can be a difficult proposition. Many have been long out of print, and when available often can be expensive (even reprints). This is especially true for the many preachers in different countries. I wanted to make this list available of free books that you can download or read online. Most are taken from www.archive.org as well as Google Books. Most all of these are older works that are out of copyright. (So this list misses newer works such as America in Crimson Red or the Faithful Baptist Witness) You can read them online or download them in various forms. You can also download a free kindle reader at Amazon- (however of note sometimes the kindle scans may be a bit garbled at places. (Older books from the 1700’s that have the larger “s” will often convert these to an “f” in the Kindle format as well.) I would also encourage everyone to visit Baptist History Homepage- http://baptisthistoryhomepage.com/ They have a tremendous amount of information there and additional links. There are some additional online resources near the end of the page.
STARTER WORKS
• THE TRAIL OF BLOOD-JM CARROL- This is a brief booklet that traces Baptist perpetuity through the ages. https://archive.org/details/TheTrailOfBlood a version in Swahili is in our files at https://www.facebook.com/groups/baptistchurchhistory/permalink/1581032465425230
• OLD LANDMARKISM-WHAT IS IT- JR GRAVES – Good brief work on Baptist perpetuity https://archive.org/det…/oldlandmarkismw00gravgoog/page/n7
GENERAL WORKS- these are larger works that are more comprehensive. In their scope they trace the general flow of Baptist history.
• A CONSISE HISTORY OF BAPTISTS- C.H. ORCHARD 1855 This work because of its size could also be put into the starter work category however I find it more comprehensive in scope than that. https://archive.org/details/concisehistoryof00orch/page/n4
• BAPTIST SUCCESION- D.B. RAY- In its intent it is similar to the Trail of Blood but it is more comprehensive. https://archive.org/details/baptistsuccessi00rayd/page/n6
• A HISTORY OF THE BAPTISTS- JOHN T CHRISTIAN 1922 Generally in a two volume set- Very good and comprehensive view of Baptist History. Christian wrote able defenses (He would also write- Did they Dip- https://archive.org/details/didtheydiporexa00chri/page/5 that completely demolishes William Whitsitt’s attempt to undermine Baptist historical roots) https://archive.org/details/historyofbaptist00chri/page/n4
• The Compendium of Baptist History- JA Shackelford- Good well written book https://archive.org/details/compendiumofbapt00shac/page/n16
• HISTORY OF THE BAPTISTS- THOMAS ARMITAGE 1887 – Armitage is not as strong on perpetuity but this two volume history has a tremendous scope https://archive.org/details/HistoryOfTheBaptists
• A HISTORY OF THE CHRISTIAN CHURCH FROM THE BIRTH OF CHRIST TO THE XVIII CENTURY- WILLIAM JONES 1812 This book is a little funny to describe-It shows perpetuity but is kind of a general church history too. Its material on the Waldensians is excellent. The book is a heavy read but comprehensive.
Volume one https://archive.org/…/WilliamJonesTheHistoryOfTheChrist
Volume two https://archive.org/…/WilliamJonesTheHistoryOfTheChrist
• THE STORY OF THE BAPTISTS IN ALL AGES AND COUNTRIES- Richard B Cook- good general overview. Holds more of the spiritual kinship theory https://archive.org/details/storyofbaptist00cookuoft/page/n4
• A GENERAL HISTORY OF THE BAPTIST DENOMINATION- David Benedict (Note largely US)
Volume one- https://archive.org/details/generalhistoryof00bene/page/n6

• BAPTIST HISTORY- JM Cramp- https://archive.org/…/baptisthistoryt00cramgoog/page/n11
REFERENCE WORKS
• THE BAPTIST ENCYCLOPEDIA- William Cathcart- This is not intended as a history but rather a reference source. There are many hundreds of Baptist Biographies here.
Volume one- https://archive.org/…/baptistencyclope01cathuoft/page/n7
Volume two- https://archive.org/details/03060726.2.emory.edu/page/n1

• As a note archive and the other resources have a tremendous amount of Biographies available. These books are a starting point to give you some names you might become interested in. Not everybody has a book written about them, but many have shorter biographies here and on Baptist History Homepage.
AMERICAN BAPTIST CHURCH HISTORIES- I will put up individual states in a separate post- these are general works covering the US (NOTE several of the general histories notably Armitage have large sections on the US)
• HISTORY OF THE BAPTISTS- Isaac Backus (Proper title- A History of New England with Particular Reference to the Denomination of Christians called Baptists)
Volume one https://archive.org/details/historyofnewengl01back_0/page/n6

• A HISTORY OF THE BAPTIST CHURCHES IN THE UNITED STATES- Albert Newman https://archive.org/details/historyofbaptist1894newm/page/n8 (Note I don’t think I can really recommend Newman’s A manual of church history- It is a history of all denominations and is wishy washy on Medieval history.)
BRITISH AND EUROPEAN BAPTIST CHURCH HISTORIES
• HISTORY OF THE WELSH BAPTISTS- J Davis https://archive.org/details/historyofwelshba01davi/page/n8
• BYE PATHS IN BAPTIST HISTORY- j Jackson Goadaby- traces Baptists in England https://archive.org/det…/byepathsinbapti00goadgoog/page/n7

MARTYROLOGIES- These books are primarily descriptions of those who paid the ultimate price for their faith in Christ.
• FOXE’S CHRISTIAN MARTYRS OF THE WORLD-JOHN FOXE although this is not only a Baptist history book per se, it does contain accounts of the persecution of the Baptists. Foxe himself was an Anglican and did leave out many accounts of Anabaptists. https://archive.org/details/JohnFoxeBookOfMartyrs
• MEMORIALS OF BAPTIST MARTYRS- This covers what Foxe missed- those brave Baptists that gave their lives for the faith. https://archive.org/det…/memorialsbaptis00browgoog/page/n5
• CROSS AND CROWN- This is not exclusively a Baptist history as others such as the Huguenots are covered. It is about the struggle between the state churches and those that stood for the Scripture.- https://archive.org/…/CrossAndCrownByJamesDabne…/page/n8
• MARTYR’S MIRROR Thielman VanBragt- This is an intimidating book- nearly 1200 pages and is the most comprehensive Martyrology for the period- it goes by year. It will move you to tears reading it. There are over 4,000 here that gave their lives. https://archive.org/details/MartyrsMirror
ADDITIONAL RESOURCES ONLINE
There are many other works on www.archive.org and Google Books including Baptist biographies and church association histories. (State histories will be in the next post) The previously mentioned Baptist History Homepage http://baptisthistoryhomepage.com/ has a tremendous amount of resources. The Digital Public Library of the USA https://dp.la/ could also be an excellent source in finding texts and even photos of old church buildings. Another resource that I found recently that may hold great promise for British and European histories and Biographies is https://www.europeana.eu/portal/en Further Online resources that I had noted earlier can be found at https://www.facebook.com/groups/baptistchurchhistory/permalink/943191685875981/
NOTE Works not included-
Until about 1880 when William Whitsett advocated the theory that we had arisen from English Separatists almost all Baptist history advocated our decent from the Anabaptists in one form or another. Some held direct descent and others spiritual kinship.
Whitsitt’s view held that the Baptists only started immersion in 1640. JT Christian and others thoroughly rebutted this view and Whitsitt’s faulty evidence but much damage was done. Today a great many Baptists hold this view (and probably most modern Baptist historians). There are tidbits of history that may be found in these books but I caution their origin theory. (I will note that I do have some of these in my library) Authors who hold this view include Vedder (Short History of the Baptists) Torbet, (history of the Baptists) Leon McBeth- (various histories) as well as Whitsitt himself.

Appendix B Ten Affirmations Concerning Our Baptist Heritage
Page 262, “The Collegiate Baptist History Workbook”, by James R. Beller. Prairie Fire Press, Copyright 2002, Second Edition Copyright 2005, Third Printing 2006
Baptists are ancient, and our ancestry can be traced through the vital principles established and set forth by our Lord Jesus Christ and His disciples in New Testament churches.
Baptists are not “Protestants,” as our testimony extends much further in history than that of Martin Luther or John Calvin.
Baptists are not “Reformed” in theology or practice, for our view of the church could never allow the marriage of church and state.
Baptists are not “Calvinists,” for the doctrines of grace were believed and preached long before John Calvin preached in Geneva.
Baptists are not “Arminian” in theology, for our forefathers preached the Gospel with fervor long before the time of Jacob Arminius, and believed they were enabled by God to persevere.
Immersion was in common use among Baptists before 1641. We reject the 1641 theory of William Whitsitt and oppose the conclusions of Henry Veddar about baptism. We view as suspect the modern histories of Robert Baker, Leon McBeth, Walter Shurden, Robert G. Torbet, and James Edward McGoldrick as they submit to the thoroughly disproved theory of William Whitsitt.
Baptist heritage is far older than Fundamentalism*, (*Interdenominational Fundamentalism of the turn of the twentieth century) or the era of the city-wide revival campaigns, or the old Evangelical Alliance.
Because Baptists have suffered at the hands of Papists and Pedobaptistic Protestants alike, we ought to venerate and remember our historic testimony far above the testimony of persecuting enemies. That is, we ought to revere the testimony of the Paulicians, Peter de Bruys, Henry of Clugny, Balthasar Hubmaier, Henry D’anvers, John Clarke, Obadiah Holmes, Valentine Wightman, Isaac Backus, Shubal Stearns, Samuel Harris, John Leland, John Taylor, Isaac McCoy, et. al. These names should be more commonly known among Baptist than those of D.L Moody, Ira Sankey, R.A. Torey, Sam Jones, Gipsy Smith, John Wilbur Chapman or Billy Sunday.
Infant baptism is the badge of antichrist, and flirtation with the badge is akin to treason against God’s word.
Ignorance of Baptist heritage, which is so infectious in our pulpits and pews today, is dangerous and must be over come with a renewed teaching of our Baptist heritage and heroes of past generations.
Brother Beller was the most prolific Baptist historian of our generation. I highly recommend his many books on Baptist history such as America in Crimson Red, Sacred Betrayal, The Collegiate Baptist History Workbook, Soul of St. Louis, etc. Please visit his book store at: click below …

Powerless Churches Have Produced a Wicked Nation (wayoflife.org)

Powerless Churches Have
Produced a Wicked Nation
April 12 , 2022
David Cloud, Way of Life Literature, P.O. Box 610368, Port Huron, MI 48061
866-295-4143, fbns@wayoflife.org
America’s fundamental problem is not systemic racism; it is systemic wickedness. And we are convinced that the root problem is the nation’s corrupt, worldly, lukewarm churches. That is the root problem in the black communities and in every community.

Since the church is the pillar and ground of the truth (1 Timothy 3:15), the New Testament church is the most important institution on earth. The greatest need of every community and every nation is New Testament churchesNothing can take its place. But in fulfillment of Bible prophecy, the vast majority of churches today are apostate. I think of Roman Catholic, Greek Orthodox, Unitarian, Seventh-day Adventist, Jehovah’s Witness, Mormon, the World Council of Churches and all of their affiliates, and many others. “Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away” (2 Timothy 3:5).

What about “evangelicals”? Most are leavened with rock & roll worldliness and cultural liberalism (they are friends with, and conformed to, the world, which is spiritual adultery), charismatic and contemplative mysticism, nothing versions (e.g., The Message, the New Living, the Good News), textually corrupt versions (e.g., the NIV, the ESV), kingdom now theology, the social justice gospel, positivism and judge not-ism. They have renounced “separatism” even though it is a clear Bible doctrine.

What about “fundamentalists”? A few exceptions notwithstanding, most of the old non-denominational fundamentalist Bible churches are New Evangelical today. The fight is gone; lines are moving. The outspoken have become silent. The holy have become worldly. The black of an unhesitating stand for the truth of God’s Word is blending into evangelical gray. The gradual acceptance of contemporary worship music is building bridges to the “wider church,” which is the apostate “one world church.”

What about fundamental Baptists? They, too, overall, are morphing into a wishy-washy, “Baptist-flavored” evangelicalism. Most, in our experience, are NEARLY POWERLESS. They might still have the right Bible and be sound in doctrine and even have “separation” in their church covenant and still hold to sacred music (usually in a lifeless, ritualistic, uneducated manner, just as a matter of vain tradition). But they are so pathetically powerless. An older preacher, who founded and pastored a large church and has preached in hundreds of churches, recently told me, “I’m sure I couldn’t join 50 churches in America, and I’m being generous. Even many pastors who have [good] music and dress standards are weak and won’t ‘rock the boat’ for anything. It’s a sad day. Most of the churches that I could recommend are new works pastored by young men.”

Consider a simple test. How many churches in America could pass this very basic biblical test, and in truth the test should be much expanded.

(1) The test of conversions. How many churches have regenerating power? A massive number of “Bible-believing” churches are seeing frighteningly few life-changing, “turn around and go the other way,” biblical conversions. If the baptismal waters are stirred, it is for children who, when they reach maturity, launch right out into the world, thus demonstrating their unregeneracy.

(2) The test of the family. How many churches have the power to build godly homes? A New Testament church is tasked with building godly homes that can raise a godly seed for Christ. Yet a great number of Bible-believing churches don’t have the power to make fathers who are the spiritual leaders of their homes and mothers who are the spiritual keepers of the home. Look at the worldly character of the homes. Look at the entertainment, the social media, the conversation, the priorities. The homes are the products of churches.

(3) The test of discipleship. How many churches have the power to produce real disciples of Jesus Christ? God’s Word plainly states that every church member is to be equipped to observe all things that Christ has commanded and to be presented perfect in Christ (Matthew 28:20Col. 1:28). That is the work of a New Testament church, and if a church can’t do what Christ has commanded there is something deeply, fundamentally wrong. Where are the churches that are taking this seriously and where this is really, effectually happening?

(4) The test of Bible skill. How many churches have the power to produce passionate, skillful Bible students? The Bible plainly says that every saint is to be skillful in Scripture, both in ability to use it and to apply it to daily living so that he or she has a biblical testing mindset (Hebrews 5:12-14).

(5) The test of the youth. How many churches have the power to win the hearts of youth to Christ and holiness? Youth are the product of the church and the home; neither institution can escape responsibility. I often ask pastors, “How many of the young people are on fire for the Lord? Are they passionate to become skillful Bible students? Are they surrendered to seeking God’s perfect will by the standard of Romans 12?” Powerless churches have produced a wicked nation.

(6) The test of evangelism and missionary vision. Churches are dying because their evangelistic vision and zeal has largely died. The pastors aren’t leading properly in this business, and the people are lukewarm or entirely cold. Christ commanded that the gospel be preached to every soul (Mr. 16:15), and that is a continual, unending responsibility. To get the gospel to every soul in the community requires planning by the leaders and 100% participation by God’s people. Christ commanded that the gospel be preached in Jerusalem, in Judea, in Samaria, and unto the ends of the earth (Ac. 1:8). Every church is to take this responsibility with utmost seriousness and strive to present the gospel to its own town, community, county, district, state, province, country, and beyond. Every church is to be an Antioch church. The church that is not doing this is a disobedient, dying church.

James Beller is the author of the book, America in Crimson Red, which takes a look at some of the lesser-known figures in American history and the Christians who, many of them, sacrificed their lives to ensure that we would have the religious freedom that we take for granted today.

Beller was born into a Catholic family and grew up in St. Louis, Missouri.
One day, when he was seventeen and living with his family in Arnold, Missouri, he went out to the car to help his mom carry in their weekly groceries.
He opened the door and saw a little pamphlet laying on the seat. It was called This Was Your Life.

After he brought in the groceries, he went up to his room and intently read through it.

He really took it all in until he got to the end and it showed an angel throwing the man into hell because he hadn’t trusted Christ. He didn’t think God would do that and thought the tract must not be true so he ripped it up and threw it in the trash.

The following week, when he went out to help carry in the groceries again, he opened the door and there was another This Was Your Life track.
Again, he went up to his room and read it. He kept rereading it and rereading it for days until he finally decided to trust Christ as his Savior.
Right away, he realized that the Catholic church hadn’t taught him this and that he needed to find a different church.

He was on a quest and tried many, many different places, but it wasn’t until his friend invited him to a tent revival that he was able to find a place that taught the truth.

He went on to attend a Baptist college, which is where he met his wife, Vickie, and started pastoring in Arnold, Missouri.

After going on a Baptist history tour and learning about some of the Baptist forefathers, it touched his heart and, even though he never started out to be an author, the Lord really put it on his heart to write a book on the subject.
He began to do a lot of in-depth research and even traveled to Europe a couple of times in order to understand it better.

He wanted to make sure he got original sources and that everything was documented extremely well.

On July 31, 2004, all 607 pages of the book, America in Crimson Red: The Baptist History of America, were published.

8 years ago today, Beller went home to Heaven, but his book continues to be an incredible resource and continues to have an impact on those who read it. VCYAmerica

How Studying Baptist Beliefs and History are Inseparable
By Dan Nelson, Baptist Historian, and Author

Baptist beliefs and their history are intertwined. It is necessary to study both to
gain and appreciate Baptist beliefs and history. This study will help us understand the uniqueness of Baptists among many religious groups. The great stories of courage and sacrifice help us comprehend why we believe what we believe and how they have brought us to the present juncture of many religious groups crying for anonymity and no real distinctions that set them apart.

There are basic beliefs that may be shared by some other groups but are as fully prounced or defined as Baptists have illustrated them. It would have been easy for the Baptists to join in with others in the Reformation and just tolerate infant baptism for the truth of the justification of faith. Yet, they believed believer’s; baptism was important and many martyrs like Balthasar Hubmaier, Felix Manz, and Michael Sattler paid dearly for it because of the state enforcement of religion in Austria, Germany (the birthplace of the Reformation), and Switzerland. They were persecuted and killed by Catholics as well as Protestants.

Obadiah Holmes was whipped on the Boston Common in 1651 for being a Baptist and handing out literature endorsing believer’s baptism. The state church arrangement led to his imprisonment and punishmen.

Thomas Gould’s refusal to have his child christened and their subsequent starting of the first Baptist church in Boston was in response to this understood practice of the Congregational church there and insistence if must be adhered to by all citizens. The church met in secret on Noodles Island outside Boston and for a while, Gould was imprisoned because he believed in individual conversion and not sponsorship salvation that infant baptism fostered’

In America, William Screven and his congregation were marched out of town in
Kittery, Maine, and threatened with hanging for teaching believer’s baptism. They were told not to come back or be hung. This led to the founding of the first Baptist church in the South in Charleston because the Baptists refused to live in a religious environment that taught error.

John Weatherford and over 50 other Baptist preachers just a few years before the Revolutionary War were jailed in Virginia for refusing to be licensed by the state church and continuing to baptize believers. He preached from jail and his
congregation came to hear him with nine people converted and baptized
after Patrick Henry came and plead his case before the militant governmental officials resulting in his release.

John Leland and other Baptist preachers were persecuted for being Baptists even after the American War of Independence. He talked with James Madison extensively about the first amendment rights of Baptists and all Christians not to be discriminated against by the government and the refusal to establish a state church. Baptists have always believed in complete freedom to practice their faith because of their persecution, and harassment in the old world as well as the new.

We could go on and on with stories such as Adoniram Judson and Luther Rice studying the Scriptures and understanding that believer’s baptism is the only New Testament baptism. They had been appointed by the Congregational church and were on their initial missionary journey overseas. They requested believer’s baptism when they arrived in India meeting the English Baptist missionary William Carey and being baptized in his church there. They became Baptists and continued to pursue their missionary call. Could their decision have something to do with them becoming one of the greatest missionarie; and missions’ promoters of all time?

The stand that Baptists took for distinct doctrines has led to the expansion of the Baptist work and brought us to the place we are today. These truths illustrated by these stories help immensely to see how we have a faith worth contending for and lost among the ash heap of generic Christianity.

Believing in these truths, it has been my privilege to contribute some to a lack of understanding about our Baptist forefathers and the truths they were willing to suffer for in two books I have authored.

Baptist Revival: Reaffirming Baptist Principles in Today’s Changing Church Scene is a reference tool for those new to your church or uninformed about prominent Baptist beliefs. I attempt to explain our beliefs with historical and biblical references hopefully in a language anyone can understand. The book has seven chapters dealing with the church, ordinances, the church’s role with government, church structure for decision-making and ministry, individual responsibility in salvation, what priesthood of believers means, and Biblical authority in our faith and practice. There are several appendices regarding Baptist Confessions and my sermon: Twelve Misassumptions about Baptists.

Baptist Biographies and Happenings in American History offers a concise and fact-filled chronological chain of biographies from the beginning of America to the present day. My book intends to help you understand continuous Baptist History through the events and individuals who have been influential in the movement through its expansion. The stories of these figures are inspirational as well as challenging. I have been researching Baptist History in America for the last several years, gathering information and piecing all these together in book form. There is information one can profit from in the discovery of these interesting insights. I have been an ordained Baptist Pastor for 49 years and have taught and written on Baptist History in Bible College, my teaching in the church, and preaching.

I wrote Baptist Biographies because most Baptist biography books had information about one or a few individuals. I wanted people to understand the history in a continuous, chronological manner through this book divided into two sections of establishment and expansion. The biographies are not exhaustive but give general information and hopefully inspiration studying these biographies of Baptists who have had an impact on our belief and practice.

Both books underscore the truth that our beliefs cannot be separated from
our history. Our beliefs have endured through the example of many courageous leaders in the Baptist Movement.

Baptist History Homepage Cunningly Devised Myths
By Rosco Brong
Religious Myths do Not Come from the Bible,
but from Depraved Minds.

That Others Must Interpret for us Baptists through the centuries have shed their blood for the principle of soul liberty, the freedom and competence of the individual soul to approach God directly through Jesus Christ as revealed in His word, without the necessity of any other mediator or of any authoritative teacher except the Holy Spirit.

But now we hear from so called Baptists the strange Catholic doctrine that ordinary Christians cannot understand the Bible: that some higher authority in the world must interpret for us and we are bound to accept that interpretation. I have heard a Baptist Sunday School “teacher” stumbling through the comments in a “quarterly,” hardly able to read, but practically sure that the comments were inspired and infallible. I have heard a Baptist “preacher” with a seminary degree for whom the answer to any theological question is to be found in what “Dr. Big Name” said. Such “teachers” and “preachers” may be far apart educationally, but spiritually they are equally to be pitied. Jesus said: “If any man will do his will he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God or whether I speak of myself” (John 7:17). “Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time. They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us. But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things. I have not written unto you because ye know not the truth but because ye know it and that no lie is of the truth. Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist that denieth the Father and the Son. Whosoever denieth the Son the same hath not the Father: but he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also. Let that therefore abide in you, which ye have heard from the beginning. If that which ye have heard from the beginning shall remain in you ye also shall continue in the Son, and in the Father. And this is the promise that he hath promised us, even eternal life. These things have I written unto you concerning them that seduce you. But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him” (I John 2:18-27.)

WHY DO YOU TEACH BAPTIST CHURCH HISTORY
AND CAN YOU GIVE ME SCRIPTURES TO BACK IT UP?

Why Study Baptist History

Short answer: The vast majority of “Christendom” is a masquerade and built by the father of lies. (John 8:44). When satan could not defeat Christ, vanquish his Holy Scripture or martyr all Christ’ disciples ‘ol Beelzebub created a counterfeit church. By studying Baptist history we can identify the New Testament church that Christ built during his earthly ministry.

Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, who cannot lie (Titus 1:2) promised the perpetuity of his church (Mt.16:18) to which he founded and built upon the foundation of the Apostles of which he was the Chief cornerstone (Eph. 2:20)

Church by definition is a “called out local assembly” (ekklesia) of baptized (immersion) believers who are organized to preach the Gospel to the lost, and teach/make disciples of all professed and baptized members. It has officers and elders as described in Eph. 4:11, 1 Tim 3:1,10; 5:17; 1 Peter 5:1,5 and has the Lord’s table (Mt. 26:28-30; I Cor. 12:23-29) & Baptism (Mt. 3:13-17; 28:19-20; I Cor. 12:13) as the only two visible ordinances and an autonomous Biblical theocentric church governance (Col. 1:18, Eph. 3:21, I Cor. 1:3;12:12).

Scriptural baptism – the authority, subject, method and purpose has separated the true NT church from pseudo church organizations since the days of Romish apostasy. Countless millions of our Baptist forefathers have been martyred (many by professing “Christians”) for “the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.” (Jude 1:3)

For this purpose NT churches are founded under the ordaining authority of NT churches (Acts 13:1-3, Heb. 6:1-2). When individuals start a church & baptize w/o authority they are operating by means of the earliest doctrinal divisions in Christendom. Their doctrine will ultimately reveal an invisible, universal church synonymous with salvation. (Folks who believe the body of Christ is composed of all the saved & who believe the “true church” is the realm of salvation to which they are Spirit baptized into this universal body of Christ) Thus their baptism depicts their doctrinal root that is tied to the great whore (RCC) and her daughters (Protestants) of a federal church/state. We find many Baptists have traded the apostolic faith for the deluding influence of ecumenical, Protestant fundamentalism particularly evident since the Niagara Conferences of the 1890’s and early 1900’s of which the protestant Scofield gained much influence among unsuspecting Baptists. Since baptism was not considered a “fundamental” of the faith it was effectively marginalized and therefore “Protestantized”.

We see from Christ’s example that baptism is not simply a matter of immersion. It is a matter of God-ordained authority. Jesus Christ identified with John in receiving his God-ordained baptism (John 1:6, Mt.3:15-16). It was that same baptism that He gave to His disciples, who baptized under His authority (Jn. 4: 1-2, Mt.28:19-20). We have external evidence that the Lord’s church practiced this ordinance from the early part of His earthly ministry. The commission came with a promise of an empowerment (Acts 1:8) on the day of Pentecost. The preaching of the word on that day resulted in 3k souls being saved & then “ADDED UNTO” the Lord’s church by means of baptism (Acts 2:41).

Many peoples in history have held to the Biblical doctrines delivered by Christ and his first church and are recognized throughout history as the Waldenses, Donatists, Novations, Albigenses, Henricians, Petrobrussians, Paulicians, Anabaptists and Baptist.

It is incumbent upon us not only to publish our history, heritage and distinctives as a beacon of light for every generation to follow but to honor those folks who have sacrificed their life and treasure for the cause of Christ and his kingdom.
To God be the glory!

IF WE STUDY AND LEARN THE TRUTH … THEN THE LIES WILL STICK OUT LIKE A ‘SORE THUMB” … IF YOU ARE A BORN-AGAIN BELIEVER IN CHRIST INDWELLED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT AND HAVE DISCERNMENT! … I Corinthians 2:14

This is true of any subject in life! Any subject! The Bible is a benchmark for the TRUTH! Any TRUTH! If you study and learn the truth about the Historical Baptist Distinctives you will readily see the falsehoods that (most) of all the (other) ‘religions and cults’ that are not based on Baptistic Theology and Distinctives have. If you use modern versions and not the King James Bible and listen to false teachers (Jude 3) you will become very confused!

“Three Major Problems In The Church” by Guy Goodell

“Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God. ” Matthew 22:29 KJV
The church claiming preference as the “Body of Christ” is in trouble. I speak not of the cults or the traditional systems bearing the name of Christian. It is what we have called fundamentalism for all these years. On vacation, I visited a church with my family. What I got there I could have secured in a tavern or a worldly concert!

The threefold problems include:

First, Christians do not read the Bible. They do have one. They often carry one. Ask them a basic Bible doctrinal question and see what you get.

Second, Christians who read the Bible ignore what the Bible says.
For instance, “I know the Bible is against my living with him out of marriage, but I need some financial support, or I’m going under.” I heard this from a young woman who was a pastor’s daughter!

Third, Christians who ignore the Bible don’t see that as a problem. One man told me this, “I’m not a bad person. I just don’t see the big point about being upset over bi-sexual issues.” He was the son of a well-known pastor. By the way, the Bible term here is sodomy.
Jesus said, “… Ye do err; not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God.” To know refers to being able to see a fact and perceiving how it relates to life. Factual knowledge without understanding the power of God leads to misdirected living. The Lord also said, “Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee,…” (Rev. 2:4a). — G.G.

(MY OPINION) This is What causes all the confusion? Modern Bible Versions and Lack of Baptist History TRUTH and lack of proper methods of Biblical Interpretation!

THE ROOT CAUSE IS … a SPIRITUAL, a HEART AND an IGNORANCE PROBLEM … that … causes all the other things that were mentioned which are the symptoms!

In a nutshell …

“Major Causes of Problems in the Church”.

“Most Christians do not read the Bible. Many Christians who read the Bible ignore what the Bible says. Some Christians who ignore the Bible don’t see that as a problem.” “Baptist Bread” July 17th, 2017 devotional by author Dr. Guy Goodell, Pastor, Bible Baptist Church, Hudson Falls, NY. with permission from Tim Green The Baptist Bread

“Ignorance of Baptist heritage, which is so infectious in our pulpits and pews today, is dangerous and must be overcome with a renewed teaching of our Baptist heritage and heroes of past generations.” Appendix B Ten Affirmations Concerning Our Baptist Heritage, ” Page 262, “The Collegiate Baptist History Workbook”, by James R. What causes all the confusion?  Modern Bible Versions and Lack of Baptist History TRUTH and lack of proper Literal Bible Interpretation!  This is the root cause of all the other things that were mentioned.

Solution:
We teach the entire counsel of God, based on the Authorized King James Bible, PROPER Biblical Interpretation, including prophecy and True Baptist Church History and Distinctives.

Roger Fulk Admin added the Description April 20, 2021

This is one of the groups that this new group is patterned after. Consider this post as a description to pattern this group after learning biblical truth and what is ‘not’ biblical truth. If you learn the truth then you will recognize what is not true! As a Born Again Believer, with the help of the HOLY SPIRIT, you will have discernment! LET THE JOURNEY BEGIN!

The purpose of this group is to be a teaching group and learning group about LEARNING BIBLICAL TRUTH – GOD’S TRUTH! And, exposing all false teachings, both, within Christianity and outside the realms of Christianity. Brothers & Sisters this is not a debate group.

There are many groups where you can go to debate. Please keep posts to the subject of this group which is A Warning Ministry. If your post is not about A Warming Ministry we will remove it.

The standards we use in this group …
We teach the entire counsel of God, based on the Authorized King James Bible, proper Biblical Interpretation, including prophecy and Baptist History, Baptist Theology, Baptist Escatology, and Baptist Historical Distinctives.

Roger Fulk ….What do I do? . I am spending several hours a day studying Baptistic Theology, Christian Apologetics and current and historical events as they apply to Biblical principles. I am developing, what some people call, a “Warning Ministry”. Looking back, I have been doing that all my life. Researching, teaching and discerning the truth. This has always been my calling.

I research the research and the Bible. Many of my sources are written by people who have dedicated and spent much of their entire lives writing and researching various subjects. In some cases writing books and preaching sermons that would be difficult for anyone to duplicate and certainly not in my lifetime. My passion is teaching and passing on resources and information to people to help others.

These comments and rules are adapted from a group named “Wolf Watch Ministry False Teaching Exposed Based on the Authorized KJB” and is one of several other warning ministries that contribute information and research to this group!

My purpose in maintaining this ministry is to biblically present the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ, to teach what the Bible says about the many controversial issues today, to refute false teaching and teachers to include the false churches and the cults and to help biblically train and disciple those that want to learn God’s word.

Wolf Watch Ministry False Teaching Exposed
Based on the Authorized KJB – Group Rules!

Folks, especially new members, we ask you to limit your posts to Wolf Watch Ministry: False Teachings Exposed subjects as outlined below! This is the scope of this group – Every day we get posts that are off-topic or from unreliable or unvetted sources or contain modern bible versions or other than Authorized 1611 King James Version or commentary that is not vetted! It is not that other things are necessarily bad just out of the scope of the group. Posts about things that are not within the Description, Standards, and rules of this group will not be approved and deleted at the discretion of the Admins.

Description: The purpose of this group is to be a teaching group and learn about and expose all false teachings, both, within Christianity and outside the realms of Christianity. Brothers & Sisters this is not a debate group. There are many groups where you can go to debate. Please keep posts to the subject of this group which is A Warning Ministry. If your post is not about Wolf Watch Ministry: False Teachings Exposed, which is A Warming Ministry we will remove it.

Inside the realms of Christianity, we expose the false teachings of erroneous Historical Baptist Church History, attacks on Historic Baptist Ecclesiology, Unscriptural Non-Baptist Positions Concerning the Kingdom of God, The Bride of Christ, Baptist Baptism, Baptist History, Heritage, Distinctives, Theology and Doctrine, Women Ministers, The Feminist Movement, Soft Separatism, New Evangelicalism, Theological Liberalism, Materialism, Arminianism, Calvinism, also called The Mystical Invisible Universal ‘Church’, Limited Atonement, Lordship Salvation, Glossolalia Regeneration, Glossolalia Sanctification, Baptismal Regeneration, Continuationism, Pentecostalism, Charismaticism, Spirit Baptism, Non-Scriptural Teachings on End Times Theology, Sinless Perfectionism, the Prosperity Gospel, Nephilium, Serpent Seed, Easy Believism, Mother Grace, Ecumenicism, Infant Baptism, the Shepherding Movement, Unitarianism, Universalism and Modern Bible Versions, Attack on the King James Bible, and other beliefs that we discover that are not Biblical including … “Cultural Factors that are Weakening Churches” and “Ignorance About Important Issues”… which is … Another reason why a large percentage of fundamental Baptist churches will be well down the emerging path in 10-20 years is that there is widespread ignorance about important issues such as contemporary music, New Evangelicalism, the Southern Baptist Convention, Reformed theology, reconstructionism, charismaticism, Neo-orthodoxy, Darwinian evolution, intelligent design, and theistic evolution, contemplative mysticism, and the emerging church.

Outside the realm of Christianity, we expose the false teachings, including Anti-Israel/Anti-Jewish beliefs, of Roman Catholicism, WICCA, Satanism, Jehovah’s Witness, Mormons, New Age, Scientology, Spiritualism, Native American Spiritism, The Way International, Christian Science, Eastern Mysticism, Kundalini, Yoga, The Unification Church, Islam, Seventh Day Adventism, The Nation of Islam, the Hebrew Roots / Messianic / Sacred Name Movement and any other groups that teach doctrine contrary to Orthodox Biblical Christian doctrine.

We do not allow any members to defend any False Teacher, teaching, or cult. Anyone who does so will be removed from this group. All posts that go off-topic will be removed.

The standards we use in this group … We teach the entire counsel of God, based on the Authorized King James Bible, PROPER Biblical Interpretation METHODS, including prophecy and Baptist History, Heritage, Distinctives, Theology, and Doctrine.

We normally do not put up videos, music, sermons, and Scripture posts unless if they are on Baptist History, Doctrine, Distinctive or other subjects for this group scope. Again not that they are bad or we are against them it’s just outside the scope of the group. Thanks for your understanding. UPDATED 04/13/21
