The New Testament is written mostly to churches, visible and individually autonomous. Epistle means letter.

“I posted the following in response to many protestant teachings being posted on Baptist History Preservation Page, on the article Br. Roger Fulk shared with us below. (Thank you for sharing it Br.)
If one wants to understand the church biblically read BAPTIST, not fundamentalist who claim to be Baptist and lack sound historical teaching as commanded in the Great Commission (twice it commands teaching which also commands to be taught). Here is an example of a Baptist.
D.B. Ray “Baptist Succession” Section III.—Baptist peculiarities.
Before following up our line of succession it becomes necessary to lay down some characteristic features which have distinguished Baptists from all others through the past ages.
It is said by Solomon that Wisdom hath built her house; she hath hewn out her seven pillars ; and I will here present seven pillars or peculiarities which distinguish Baptists from all others.
1. The Baptists, as a church or kingdom, recognize Jesus Christ alone as their founder and head.
2. The Baptists regard the Bible alone as their rule of faith and practice.
3. The Baptists perpetuate the Bible order of the commandments ; they teach repentance, faith, baptism, and the Lord’s Supper.
4. Baptists immerse, or bury with Christ in baptism, only those who profess to be dead to, or freed from, sin.
5. Baptists recognize equal rights or privileges in the execution of the laws of the kingdom of Jesus Christ.
6. Baptists observe the Lord’s Supper at his table in his kingdom.
7. Baptists have never persecuted others; but have themselves always been peculiarly persecuted and every-where spoken against.
To give explanation we add, Eternal Life, Church, and Kingdom are understood bibilically when one understands the doctrine of Christ. Heb 6:1 Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, :2 Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.
The Kingdom was set up by the Lord Jesus Christ himself fulfilling Dan 2:44 And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever.
God did not change prophecy because some ethnic Jews rejected his Son but fulfilled it to the letter and continues to this day and will continue for it shall never be destroyed.
He appointed this kingdom to visible churches – Luke 22:29 And I appoint unto you a kingdom, as my Father hath appointed unto me;

These are ALL letters to churches, visible congregations with membership entered by baptism, with authority back to the apostles, the apostles who had to have John’s baptism (Acts 1:22). These are not written to all saved people but to CHURCHES.
This is sound historic Baptist doctrine supported by 20 centuries of preaching, practice and persecution.
When a saved person quits reading the Bible about “me” and begins to read it about the Lord Jesus Christ, his churches and his kingdom and applies the Bible as such, it unfolds with meaning, authority and power.”
