8 Rules of Biblical Understanding: Hermeneutics

8. Choose the Simplest Alternative.

Paul Lee Tan summarizes this last step well, “When alternative interpretations seem equally plausible and contain equally good sense, the general rule of thumb is to choose the one interpretation which impose the least strain on credulity.”
Remember God used shepherds, fisherman and fig harvesters to write His Word. Keeping it simple without adding elements that would have been out of place for them would make the best practice.
