“When Does Sin Occur?” • “Do not err, my beloved brethren. ” James 1:16

If a person lived an impeccable life, by definition they • would be incapable of sinning. I, personally, have never made the acquaintance of an individual like that. The “Doctrine of Peccability” is not often mentioned but it is the most definitive tool in life to determine the extent of or act of sin in a person’s life. When the opportunity for sin is presented, accompanied by temptation, sin has not yet occurred or been committed. Jesus said, “Blessed is the man that endureth temptation:… ” (James 1:12). Jesus Christ was tempted also, yet He never sinned (cf. Heb. 4:15). The next step is illumination or the presentation of an opportunity to sin. We all know that times to sin are blatant and are on every hand in our day and time. Even so, at this time sin in one’s life has not yet commenced. The third point of peccability now raises its ugly and ponderous head—the debate. We ponder, if no one finds out, if my parents never know, if my pastor doesn’t catch me …too late, debate is the opening salvo of sin and leads quickly to the decision to step out of bounds and then the eventual act. Most folk think that the “act” is when sin occurs, • but it is two steps back, when weighing whether or not one could get away with it. James said, “But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed” (James 1:14)… and then, sin and death take place (cf. vs. 15). — T.G.
