Baptist History, Heritage and Distinctives
Daniel Merrill was the Pastor of a large colonial Congregational Church in Sedgwick, Maine. Catholics as well as Protestants shared a disdain and a deep prejudice against Baptist people of the book. Daniel Merrill was hoping the Baptist were wrong in regards to the Biblical doctrine of baptism by complete immersion under water. The power of a lifelong premise was being challenged. Nonetheless he was willing to completely submit to God no matter what scripture revealed. (My thoughts: A practice that would do well for many “Christians”).
Excerpts from the Autobiography of Pastor Daniel Merrill, 1765-1833.
