While this is included in the book that I will be reviewing tomorrow, I wanted to include a separate review of this book since it is easily available and an early standard on McCoy’s work and life. Of the ones reviewed this is the earliest published (besides McCoy’s own book) in 1895. Sometimes history written closer to the time understands the trials better. To most all of us today it is difficult to understand the rigors of traveling and frontier life that Isaac and his family faced. This book understands that better. It is well written and gives you a good sense of being there.Every book has its strengths and weaknesses. While I highly recommend the book there is a gap in its vision. While Wyeth touches somewhat on McCoy’s problems with the board it tends to minimize them to a good extent and the split between the Board and McCoy is barely touched on. Wyeth’s main source is History of Baptist Indian Missions, so Wyeth would have been acutely aware of some of the downright dishonest things that the board did to McCoy. These are not or barely mentioned. In all likelihood that was so as not to embarrass “the denomination.” Baptist history both good and bad should be dealt with. (This will be the subject of the fourth video) Despite this I still recommend reading this book.
