The Temple of CiabasThe Temple of the Goat Shed?? That is what the name means. Kind of a strange name for sure but with a purpose behind it. Initially the real one in Angrogna, Italy pretty much looked like a big barn of the region but this was a church building. Indeed this was the first church building the Waldensians built. Through the years the building was burned many times- it would later be fortified by bars and spikes upon the windows (and a window above the door where hot oil could be poured during a siege!) Edicts strictly forbid the Waldensians to call people for worship so there were no bell towers- such things in the times of war would also call attention to a building as a church. The inside of the reproduction in Valdese NC- like the original is very plain- The original was meticulously measured and reproduced. Inside of the original were buried those who were refused burial in the local cemeteries (the town is on the edge of the Waldensian territory and the Catholics controlled the cemeteries) The tour mentions one being a preacher whom the Catholics challenged to a debate. He handily won it and as a reward was burned at the stake.

His remains were buried in the temple. I am unsure if his name or any of the others buried in the original temple are known.
