Travels in Baptist History 25 The Baptist Mission Church Started at the Valley Towns Mission in North Carolina.
The mission was started on December 1, 1817 by Charles Dawson and Humphrey Posey. It would contain a boarding school. Later Evan Jones would take over operation of the mission. Jesse Busyhead would pastor the church. (I will have more on him in the next installment) The mission would move overland on the trail of Tears in two groups one lead by Jones and the other by Bushyhead. Although there were deaths along the way these groups fared better than others on the trail of tears. The story of the Cherokees singing Guide me O Thou Great Jehovah on the trail of tears comes from this church. Later due to the geography of where the members lived this church would divide forming what is now the First Baptist Church of Talequah. The Mission church is located near Westville, Oklahoma. The area was once called Breadtown as this was where government distribution of rations was done. The mission station was burned by the Confederates in the Civil War because of an anti-slavery stand. The present building was built in 1888. Depending on how you count it this is the oldest Baptist Church in Oklahoma. However even though it is older- it was not the first founded in Oklahoma that distinction goes to the Fountain Baptist Church (which is another story)+2GUIDE 41 • TRAVELS IN BAPTIST HISTORY BY JIM CURRANTravels in Baptist History by Jim CurranSee Full Guide36You and 35 others3 Comments6 SharesLikeCommentShare
