Particular Baptist – Jesus Atonement was Universal but Particular in its Application
“That is what Particular Baptist meant – “The atonement of Jesus Christ is universal – general – in its provision but limited – particular – in its application.” They battled the false doctrine of universal salvation, which was strong in that day, which doctrine taught that all, every living person, would be saved, and much of their statements showed that this “Particular Atonement” was particular in it application as in only to those who believed by faith as they had chosen to allow God to work repentance and faith in themselves. Hence the society of the day and the false doctrines of the time must be taken in consideration when trying to understand their writings. When reading the writings of the Baptist and Protestants in the 17th and 18th century one must try to grasp the mindset of a state church marriage as it was the society in which they lived. This mind set is hard for us Americans to comprehend as we have not lived under such an oppressive religious government system.” Dwayne Hinson
“Particular Baptist were not Sovereign Grace in the way that it is spoken of today as in man has no choice in whether or not to be saved. They denied this in multiple writings and clearly state man is a free agent, a free will. The Philadelphia Association circular letter of 1783 was entitled “Freewill of Man”. The letter is summed up at he end with ” Thus, dear brethren, we have brought to your view, and briefly explained this abstruse subject, so far as the nature of it, and the narrowness of our limits would admit. You see three things are certain: 1st, The decrees and providence of God: 2dly, That he is neither the author nor approver of sin: yet, 3dly,That man is a free agent.” Dwayne Hinson, Pastor of Harward Chapel Baptist Church, Norwood, NC
HISTORICALLY: In 1792 John Asplund published a Registry of Baptist Churches in North America. (It can be found on line). In fact the Regular/Particular Baptist Churches in 1790 accounted for 795 of the total 868 Baptist Churches, 623 of the total 700 ordained Baptist ministers, 407 of the total 437 Licensed ministers and 58,398 of the total 64,546 Baptist Church members in North America in 1790. So more than 90% of ALL Baptist in North America were Particular Baptists.
BIBLE VERSES – ”For therefore we both labour and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, specially of those that believe” (I Tim 4:10).
“He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him” (John 3:36)
“But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man. For it became him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings” (Hebrews 2:9-10).
