Travels in Baptist HistoryFirst African Baptist Church- Savannah GA Arguably the oldest Black Baptist Church in America this church has a tremendous heritage. Its roots go back to The Silver Bluff Baptist Church founded in 1773 in Beech Island South Carolina. (There are three churches that are all directly attributable as parts of this church) A group from there moved to Savannah as the foundation of this church. Wait Palmer of Stonington CT baptized George Lisle and David George and formed the Silver Bluff Church. (Palmer also had baptized Shubal Stearnes- what an impact this one man had yet Palmer is forgotten) On January 20, 1788 Abraham Marshall “officially” constituted the church in a local barn. The present building dates to 1859 and was a station on the underground railroad. George Lisle would leave from this church in 1782 for Jamaica as the first American missionary preceding Adoniram Judson by thirty years.
