” Ye Fathers”

“And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord ” Ephesians 6:4

Radio stations are required to air public service announcements. They may promote the use of car seats for children or Smokey the Bear warns us about wildfires. However, the ones I hear most are those promoting fatherhood. The message is, “Be a dad. Spend time with your children. Be there for them.”

Children are dying unnecessarily in car crashes, as people are driving impaired, but the greatest problem is absentee fathers. It is strange, is it not, that we never hear announcements telling mothers to be moms! The problem is absentee dads. Our homes are under attack by divorce, immorality (live-ins without license), outof-wedlock births, and the government supporting the family. Men are fathering children and abandoning them. Stepfathers can and should be dads to their stepchildren, but live-in boyfriends, no way.

Recently, our youth director told his father, the pastor, “Dad, last night we had forty-four young people in the youth meeting. I noticed that not one of them comes from a home with both biological parents.” I am speaking of a small town with one church for about every 250 people and a Baptist church for every five hundred people. The problem is not juvenile delinquency, but rather parental delinquency. Malachi ends with the promise of an Elijah to “…turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to theirfathers, “(Mal. 4:6). — R.C.
