Not everyone interprets the Bible in the same way. Broadly speaking, however, there are two basic methods of interpretation found throughout history. One: Literal Interpretation – which accepts the Biblical text at face value (with certain provisions). Two: Non-Literal Interpretation – which seeks a different understanding from the obvious. This lecture presents a survey of the various historical ‘Schools’ of Biblical Interpretation. In briefly studying these Schools, two questions will be asked.1. How did they view the Scripture?2. How did they interpret the Scripture? While our interest centers on the systems of hermeneutics found throughout the history of Christendom, this survey will also include a look at Jewish interpretive Schools.I.
