Mercy & Truth Have Met!
Mercy & Truth Have Met!”
“Mercy and truth are met together; … ” Psalm 85:10a
The path of righteousness and holiness is also the path of
mercy and truth. Those two elements are united in all of God’s
paths. His covenants are mercy, and His testimonies are truth.
Mercy and truth. These two words are yoked up in several
places in Scripture. I can believe and practice truth, and still
have mercy. I can have standards and still practice tolerance.
Mercy has to do with my treatment of people. Truth has to
do with my doctrine and principles, what I believe is right.
Mercy means to withhold the judgment that a person might
deserve. Truth is the breath of God that I operate by. Truth is
always given for the benefit of the people-that’s God’s
nature. But if the truth is going to benefit people it must be
administered in mercy.
The path of separation is a path of mercy and truth. We are
supposed to speak the truth in love. I cannot change the truth
to satisfy anybody. But I’m not supposed to be unloving, even
when the truth hurts. I’m supposed to be merciful and gentle
and loving with the truth. I’m never supposed to compromise
truth, or change the truth, or water down the truth to
accommodate people. But I’m never supposed to be unkind or
unmerciful with the truth. I’m to speak the truth in love,
because love is merciful. – D.C.
