While they followed Paulon his missionary trips, they also sought to return to churcheshe had planted and pressured their members to add the Law totheir beliefs. They never won anyone to Christ, but they knewof Paul’s success, and they tried to move in and take over.Paul uses a play on words. He marveled at how soon theyremoved “unto another gospel” (1:6), and said, “which is notanother” (1:7). In 1:6 he uses, another as “another of adifferent kind,” but in 1:7 he uses another as “another of anequal or the same kind.” It is true now, as it was then, thatnothing needs to be added to the work of Christ’s death, burialand resurrection for salvation.Paul alerts the church that they are carrying excessbaggage if they return to the Law. Jesus said, “It is finished”(John 19:30). Every Old Testament “type” had been realizedthat day on the hill called Calvary. He also reprimanded theirreturn to circumcision (Gal. 5:6) and to keeping the Jewishfeast days (Gal. 4:10).There are modern Judaizers today which go into churchesand try to find a weak believer and lead him into returning tothe Law. Don’t allow yourself to be fooled by them. Those two elements are united in all of God’spaths. His covenants are mercy, and His testimonies are truth.Mercy and truth. These two words are yoked up in severalplaces in Scripture. I can believe and practice truth, and stillhave mercy. I can have standards and still practice tolerance.Mercy has to do with my treatment of people. Truth has todo with my doctrine and principles, what I believe is right.Mercy means to withhold the judgment that a person mightdeserve. Truth is the breath of God that I operate by. Truth isalways given for the benefit of the people-that’s God’snature. But if the truth is going to benefit people it must beadministered in mercy.The path of separation is a path of mercy and truth. We aresupposed to speak the truth in love. I cannot change the truthto satisfy anybody. But I’m not supposed to be unloving, evenwhen the truth hurts. I’m supposed to be merciful and gentleand loving with the truth. I’m never supposed to compromisetruth, or change the truth, or water down the truth toaccommodate people. But I’m never supposed to be unkind orunmerciful with the truth. I’m to speak the truth in love,because love is merciful. – D.C. Every man for himself! Withouttruth, I have no absolutes. Without mercy, I have no regard forpeople. When that happens you have a society out of control,and that’s about where we are today in America.The unjust judge, (Luke 18) had no mercy on the widowand he had no regard for truth. The Bible says he feared notGod, neither regarded any man. What does that mean? Hedidn’t have any mercy and he didn’t have any truth. He didn’tcare about the woman and didn’t care about God. He didn’toperate under any final authority. It didn’t matter to him whatwas right and wrong. It didn’t matter to him what happened tothe woman. He didn’t care at all.Then, there are some that have mercy and truth. When weunite these two, we are going to act like the Lord. This is whatfundamentalism is, truth that is administered in mercy. Jesusadministered truth in mercy. He never compromised truth, butHe was always merciful, to Nicodemus, to the woman at thewell, to the woman taken in adultery. He said, “Neither do Icondemn thee; go, and sin no more. ” “Neither do I condemnthee.” That’s mercy. “Go and sin no more.” That’s truth. Hesaid, “Don’t keep doing what you’ve been doing. Morning and Evening,May 5). There are powerful considerations in those words mypeople. They are easily overlooked:First, the title speaks of a personal relationship betweenGod and those called my people. It is a relationship basedupon the finished work of God’s Son, the Lord Jesus. Onlythose “in Him” can be included in God’s people.Second, the title speaks of personal protection. Godsecures what He owns (cf. John 10:27ff). He also defendswhat He owns against assault by the many enemies they face.He is a shield and buckler to His people (cf. Psa.91:4).Third, the title speaks of personal comfort. In Psalm 23,David said, “I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rodand thy staff they comfort me” (vs. 4).Fourth, the title speaks of accountability. In II Chronicles7, God explains that His people are accountable to Him. Heresponds appropriately to their disobedience and to theirobedience. He is the One to whom they must be accountable.“If my people … shall humble themselves … then will I hear fromheaven, and will forgive their sin … ” (II Chron. 7:14). – G.G.
