Her judgment for her disobedience is just, but the slandering of her motive is wrong. This woman is known to me as Mrs. Lot, the wife of Abraham’s nephew Lot. You probably know the story of how she disobeyed the angel and looked back toward Sodom and was turned into a pillar of salt. But, have you wondered why a wife and mother would look back at a city renowned for it’s homosexual extremes as well as pride and other forms of debauchery? Remember that Abraham negotiated with the Lord to spare the city from judgment if there were just ten righteous people in it. This is in Genesis 18. He began the negotiation with a request for sparing the city if there were 50 and continued until he received the promise to spare if there were 10. Why did he stop at 10?I believe that Abraham knew that Lot, his wife, his two young daughters were four and his married daughters and their husbands were either six more or four adults and two grandchildren. I propose that Mrs. Lot looked back because she left daughters and possibly grandchildren in Sodom to experience wrath of God upon the wicked cities of the plain of Jordan. Yes, she disobeyed, yes, she was wrong, BUT don’t impune her character by misjudging her motive. I heard a recording today that stirred up anger in my soul by declaring that the sons-in-law that stayed behind in Sodom were the intended husbands of the two daughters that left town with Lot. This is the second time I have recently heard a similar claim, indicating that the sons-in-law were so debauched that they wouldn’t consumate the marriage with Lot’s young daughters. Such ideas are ludicrous and suggest that the writers have little knowledge of the depth of Sodom’s sin. Lot offered the two daughters to the mob surrounding his house. If they were betrothed or married, they were not his to give. Also, having virgin daughters in a city as wicked as Sodom was quite an achievement. I refuse to condemn Mrs. Lot for having the heart of a mother. Yes, she disobeyed and she received the judgment for it, but give her some grace for her most likely motive in a moment of weakness.
