“All who know much of the Baptist denomination must have regretted that so few are acquainted with its early history. We are not surprised that those who do not admit the scripturalness of our principles should be thus ignorant; nor can we be surprised that those who have superciliously looked upon our comparative feebleness should have put us down as of latter-day growth; but it remains a matter of great surprise that our own congregations should be, for the most part, uninstructed in the past doings of our body.” – Charles Haddon Spurgeon
(The above quote is from Charles Spurgeon’s review of the 1852 book “Baptist History” by J.M. Cramp. This review was published in Spurgeon’s newspaper “The Sword and the Trowel” in August 1868. His review can be read in its entirety at: http://baptisthistoryhomepage.com/cramp.review.by… J.M. Cramp was a Canadian Baptist. His Baptist History book has been reprinted by the Baptist Standard Bearer and can be purchased at: https://www.standardbearer.org/…/baptist-history-from…/ )
