What is Truth?

What is Truth?
This is a timeless question with an eternal answer.
Jesus, standing before Pontius Pilot is asked this enduring question (John 18:38). “What is truth?”
Like the old Acapella song says, “Truth was standing right in front of him.” Yet, Pilot did not recognize the truth. Sometimes individuals are seeking the truth, others, at times are content, not to know the truth. Most it seems would rather have the truth and be free like Jesus says in John 8:31-32,
“Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”
What is the definition of truth? Truth, the Greek word, ἀλήθεια (alētheia), is translated as “verity or truth” and is used universally to mean “what is true in any matter under consideration.”1
Offering several definitions, Merriam Websters Dictionary says that truth is “(1) the body of real things, events, and facts: ACTUALITY (2) the state of being the case: FACT (3) often capitalized : a transcendent fundamental or spiritual reality (4) a judgment, proposition, or idea that is true or accepted as true.”2
While the facts about Jesus have been watered down and added to for many people over the years, the Bible, God’s Word has not changed. The Bible is Truth (John 17:17). God the Father in Heaven has given us a book with the facts about Jesus, salvation, and the Gospel.
Truth Defended attempts to share these facts about God and the Bible by providing Engaging Theology and Reasonable Apologetics. But What about truth and Jesus?
Jesus, the pre-existent Son of God came to earth in the form of a man, lived a perfect life, and died a cruel death. The story of Jesus begins in Genesis when the purpose of His coming to earth is revealed to be a rescue mission to redeem mankind from their sin (Genesis 3:15). Jesus said, “I Am the Truth” (John 14:6).
Then the Old Testament History gives us a glimpse of Jesus as King with the earthly Kingdom of Israel wit it’s judges, kings, and prophets demonstrating the need for a new Kingdom and the new King, Jesus.
Right at the start of the New Testament, the Gospel reveals the life and times of Jesus and gives us four perspectives of the death, burial and resurrection of Christ. It is in the Gospels that soterian (Salvation) message of the Bible is acutely conveyed. To be saved from sin, one must confess Jesus as his Lord and Savoir.
Speaking of being born again and knowing one has salvation by God’s grace through faith in Jesus, John 1:12 says, “But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name.”
Notice the 3 underlined words: When one believes Jesus is the crucified and risen Son of God, he receives Jesus (conveys acceptance in prayer) to God the Father his personal faith in Jesus. When this believing and receiving takes place the individual becomes a son or daughter of God.
The Bible continues to share truth with the Acts of the Apostles and the letters to the church in the rest of the New Testament. Here, the redeemed people of God are seeking the Lord and serving Him. Then the story of Jesus culminates with Him coming back to earth and setting up His Kingdom. One day, everyone will know and proclaim that Jesus is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords.
Do you have the truth in your heart? Have you believed and received Jesus as your Lord and Savoir? Today, you can become a Christian.
Ask Jesus to be your Savoir. Confess to God your sinfulness, admit to Him your faith in the crucifixion and physical resurrection of Jesus.
