“The Shape of Your Story” Psalm 119:125
“The Shape of Your Story”
“I am thy servant; give me understanding, that I may know
thy testimonies.” Psalm 119:125
One sage of the past said, “There is properly no history:
only biography.” A contemporary added these words back to
him, “The study of history is nothing more than the study of
great men and women.”
History is biography. This is especially true of the Bible.
Take away the people, and it would be difficult to think your
way through the Scriptures. It would be a hard book to
understand, full of abstract concepts unrelated to life.
It is the people who make the Scriptures connect with
reality. Take the book of Genesis, for example. It is the
biography of twelve men wrapped in a historical account of
God’s movements on earth. You have Adam and his three
sons: Cain, Abel and Seth. That brings us to Noah and his
three boys: Shem, Ham and Japheth. This is followed by the
account of Abraham and his son Isaac, followed by Isaac’s son,
Jacob, followed by his son, Joseph and that’s it! This is the
basic outline of the big book of Genesis.
When you get to Exodus, it’s primarily the biography of
one man, Moses. The focus of the Holy Spirit centers upon
one individual and stays there through four more books of the
Bible, Exodus to Deuteronomy. It’s the story of God’s
personal servant, whom he shaped into a man of selfless
dedication. Question: What is your story shaping up to be?
And what or who are you allowing to shape it? – S.G.
