“Are You Thirsty?”
” … Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him
come unto me, and drink. ” John 7:37b
We live in a day when many have come to Calvary for
pardon, but have avoided Siloam for purity and Pentecost for
power! Many have full minds but empty hearts, full cups but
empty heads, full lists but empty souls and full schedules but
empty lives.
Jesus had just had another “one way” confrontation with
the Pharisees and priests, that evolved into an anointed
conversation. He asked, “If any man thirst … ” and the
question resounds today, “Have you ever been thirsty?” Have
you been to the place where there was no foreseeable way to
quench your desire for water? It has happened to me twice on
mission trips; once in Mexico, lost in the Sierra Madre
Mountains for three days and once in the Philippines, way up
in a jungle village, with no potable water (suitable for
drinking!) Jesus is inquiring all who will listen, if they are
interested in quenching the thirst of their souls.
In the next part of our verse Christ constrains men,
” … come unto me, … ” Yes, He is the source of the supply for
the sin-sick souls of all men who will come to Him. The water
of the Word of God is the only solution that will satiate the
sinner and make him a saint! Jesus said in Luke 9:23, that a
man should “deny himself, ” not deny things, but take up his
cross and follow Him wholeheartedly. The appropriation is
found in the last word of our text-drink! There is no
satisfaction in looking at the water, touching or smelling it.
One must take the cup to his lips and drink! Then you can
know the rivers that flow in verse 38. – T.G.
