“The Shadow Of Death”
“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of
death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy
staff they comfort me.” Psalm 23:4
The term “the shadow of death” occurs twenty times in
the Bible and most often in the Book of Job. The terrors and
sorrows of death (Psalm 55:4 & 116:3) must be dealt with now,
not when we are old, feeble and our minds are senile. Every
Christian needs the presence and assistance of God as never
before during the sunset of earth’s short day. The “Song of the
sons of Korah” concludes on the right note, “For this God is
our God for ever and ever: he will be our guide even unto
death” (Psa. 48:14). And as surely as God has called us into
this final act of human life, He has promised to see us through
it all. Whoever wrote Psalm 71 was contemplating old age
and death, but he did so with fear and wonderment. Listen to
the deep pathos of his trembling plea, “Cast me not off in the
time of old age; forsake me not when my strength faileth. ” (vs.
9). He continues, “Now also when I am old and grayheaded,
O God, forsake me not;” (vs. 18). God responded to these
pitiful prayers later through the prophet Isaiah, “And even to
your old age I am he; and even to hoar hairs will I carry you:”
(Isa. 46:4). Rest assured that God will “carry” us through
whatever the valley of death may hold. Again, remember it is
written, “When thou passest through the waters, I will be with
thee.” (Isa. 43:2). Amen and AMEN! -R.P.
