“The Things!”
” … Take heed, and beware of covetousness: … “
Luke 12:15b
“And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of
riches, and the lust of other things entering in, choke the word,
and it becometh unfruitful. ” Mark 4:19
In our dual texts, I find one word and a statement with
about the same meanings, covetousness and lust of other
things. People who covet things that others have or do, are
usually very miserable folk. Equally, those who lust for things
that aren’t theirs or are unavailable items, due to
circumstances, ability or just wanting things because they are
greedy or jealous, find themselves grasping at illusive straws!
Some individuals cheat, steal, lie or write bad checks to
get what they want. These ill-gotten gains soon vanish, or the
criminal gets arrested, prosecuted and jailed for their actions.
I heard of a business in a liberal college town that put a
sign up, near the cash register for all to see. It read: CHECKS
TAKEN ONLY BY THOSE 80 YEARS OLD,ACCOMPANIED BY BOTH PARENTS!! Yes, that’s a bit
humorous and my dear, departed dad, the “King of Corny
Jokes” would have loved it!
Friend, the Lord in our verses is talking to us, His children,
Christians, and in speaking those words to His disciples and
whoever else was there, allows them to echo into our hearts
and lives 2,000 years later! Don’t let the “things” of life get in
the way of being honest, trustworthy and true in all you do and
