“In Christ”
“Wherefore, though I might be much bold in Christ to
enjoin thee that which is convenient.” Philemon 1:8
The phrase “in Christ” is referred to seventy-seven times
in the New Testament. Our verse today is in the middle of
three verses in Philemon that use the words “in Christ. “There
are several different “senses” used in the two-word statement
“in Christ. ” Besides that, in Colossians 1:27 the Apostle Paul
wrote that God had made known “the riches of the glory of this
mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope
of glory:” So, we are “in Christ” and Christ is in us! That
pretty well settles the secure hope we have and hold, enjoying
the eternal security God provides to the redeemed.
In September of 1991, I was preaching in the Jean Prison,
south of Las Vegas, Nevada. A prisoner, Charles Armstrong,
who had been incarcerated there since 1975, got born again
during the previous day’s meeting. He came to a prayer
meeting we had before the next service and said, “I had a
moving experience yesterday. I got saved!” Asking if he too
could pray, I gladly invited him to join us. He said this in his
prayer, “Thank you Jesus, for bringing me into your life.”
Where did that felon get that truth from in less than 24
hours? Perhaps Galatians 4:6 resonated in his newly
redeemed soul: “And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth
the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.”
Or maybe, “Christ is all, and in all” (Col 3:11b). Anyway,
Charles got Him, I got Him, He has us … the question is, “Do
you have Jesus Christ and does Christ Jesus have you?” -T.G.
