RECOGNIZING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN CHURCH AND STATE
“When the pillars of Christianity are overthrown.”
Jedidiah Morse (1761-1826), was a minister who taught at Yale University and became known as the “father of American geography” due largely to his authorship of geography textbooks that were once staples in American schools. He was a strong opponent of the heresy and liberalism that he saw creeping into churches and schools He wrote:
“To the kindly influence of Christianity we owe that degree of civil freedom, and political and social happiness which mankind now enjoys. Whenever the pillars of Christianity shall be overthrown, our present republican forms of government, and all blessings which flow from them, must fall with them.”
Many Christians today do not and will not recognize the relationship that exists between doctrinally sound Christianity and the survival of our “republican forms of government, and all blessings which flows from them.” But they should. Christians should appreciate and support doctrinally sound churches, and “earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints” (Jude 3).
