This quote reflects a warning that the Bible itself gives about the great falling away. Scripture teaches that before the return of Christ, many who claim to follow God will turn from the truth.
II Thessalonians 2:3 (KJV) says:
“Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition.”
The “falling away” means people departing from the truth of God’s Word. It is not only the world that rejects righteousness, but even many within the visible church who begin to justify sin instead of rebuking it.
The Bible warned about this spirit:
Isaiah 5:20 (KJV)
“Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness.”
When sin is defended and normalized, truth will appear offensive. Those who preach repentance will often be hated or mocked.
Jesus explained why:
John 3:20 (KJV)
“For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.”
Light exposes sin, and many would rather silence the messenger than repent.
The apostle Paul also warned that a time would come when people inside the church would reject sound preaching:
II Timothy 4:3 (KJV)
“For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears.”
Instead of wanting truth, they will want messages that make them comfortable.
But the true church must remain faithful. A true preacher does not change God’s Word to please people. He calls sinners to repentance and points them to Jesus Christ.
Romans 6:23 (KJV) reminds us:
“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
So the biblical message is clear:
– Do not justify sin.
– Do not hate those who preach truth.
– Repent and follow Christ while there is time.
Even if the world rejects it, God’s truth never changes.
The faithful believer must stand with the Word of God, even when the majority turns away.
