Chief Meshingomesia is  buried here. He was first witnessed to by the missionary to the Indians Isaac McCoy (who calls him  Chief Charlie.) He would later be saved and baptized about 1860. The original  church was located on approximately the site of where the school sits  today.  The school was originally located about 100 Feet Southeast. The  school has been restored- The school was operated by the Miamis and from what info I have been able to find did initially have some ties to the Baptists but not exclusively (Otho Winger who taught there much later was Brethren.) In a great injustice when the eastern Miamis  lost recognition of their tribe, the government took ownership of (really defrauded and stole) the school, the church building and the cemetery. (The church building sat abandoned after that, fell into disrepair and was demolished)  Eventually they would get  them back and the school which was being used as a corn crib was moved to the site of the old demolished church building. Sadly the Eastern Miamis have never been able to be restored as a recognized  tribe. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/scontent-lga3-2.xx.fbcdn.net\/v\/t39.30808-6\/296001065_772753150545969_3009795885867349579_n.jpg?_nc_cat=110&amp;ccb=1-7&amp;_nc_sid=5cd70e&amp;_nc_ohc=Jx62x1yY9LEAX9OpPdL&amp;_nc_ht=scontent-lga3-2.xx&amp;oh=00_AT9aSjBFBnV6ZYJA7Qkqe1bnRcxTSDDxpCGLxxGp07CIUw&amp;oe=62E93D7F\" alt=\"May be an image of monument, tree, outdoors and text that says 'MIAMI INDIAN CEMETERY The largest Indian cemetery in Indiana. Few graves are marked The Indians buried here are largely descendants of Chief Metocinya and include Meshingomesia and his family. The first burial was probably in 1873. Burial was contrary to Indian tradition and reflects Christian influence. An Indian Baptist Church and an Indian school were located here. Otho Winger. taught at the school 1895-1898 This land is part of the last Indian reservation in Indiana. The site of the battle of Mississinewa (1812) may be seen along the Mississinewa River to the southwest.
