808\/25\/22h<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0\u00a0\u00b7\u00a0Notable Happenings in the Life of Balthasar H\u00fcbmaier (1480-1528)The Theologian of the Anabaptist Movement- Balthasar H\u00fcbmaier was a former priest who became an Anabaptist through studying the Scripture and coming to an understanding of New Testament faith and practice.-He was schooled at the University of Freiburg, under Master Eck who battled Luther in debate when the Reformation broke out. -He followed his mentor, Master Eck, to the University of Ingolstadt receiving the Doctor of Theology degree in 1512. and was given a chair of theology there. He also was the student pastor and Chaplin at the Church of the Virgin. -Hubmaier then went to Regensburg University but left there over controversy with Dominicans at the school and became the rector of the church at Waldshut. There he had a congregation built up and functioning well as a growing Catholic parish.-As Hubmaier began to study the Scripture he became convinced that state religion was wrong especially when it enforced a certain faith and persecuted all others. He began to question much of Catholicism\u2019s methods in writing Heretics and Those Who Burn Them in 1524. Further study brought him to a conversion experience trusting in Christ’s sacrifice for sin and Him alone to save Him, departing from work\u2019s salvation. -Then William Reublen came to Waldshut convincing Hubmaier of believer\u2019s baptism. He baptized Hubmaier and later Hubmaier baptized over 300 members who requested it in 1525. It appears from certain history that the baptism was by pouring but toward the end of his ministry there is good information that he advocated immersion and practiced it. – Philip Schaff, who is usually quite accurate on such points, is confident that H\u00fcbmaier, in 1527, practiced dipping. Dipping or immersion became the standard practice of administering baptism as Hubmaier continued to grow in his understanding of the ordinance-Hubmaier was also married at this time to Elizabeth Hugline, thus believing that celibacy was not taught in the Scripture for a pastor. At this time he had fully cast his lot with the Anabaptists and left Catholicism. -Hubmaier began to defend believer’s baptism against Ulrich Zwingli in Zurich. He sided with the Brethren and for a short time was imprisoned with other Anabaptist leaders on a trip to Zurich for a short time until they escaped and Hubmaier went back to Waldshut where things were getting even more heated. -Changes were made in the Waldshut church so that it became an Independent church that identified with Anabaptism. The Catholic authorities and forces under the Archduke Ferdinand of Austria were sent to arrest him resulting in him fleeing to Zurich. He hoped that Zwingli would protect him from Catholic authorities and Ferdinand.-In Zurich, Hubmaier was opposed by Zwingli smarting from his writings for believers\u2019 baptism and debate with him. Hubmaier was jailed and recanted his views on believers\u2019 baptism after much torture. He even wrote an Apology,-Thinking this was a boon, Zwingli wanted Hubmaier to share he recanted of believer\u2019s baptism in the pulpit for the Fraumunster church. -With a packed house Hubmaier instead of sharing about his recant, recanted his recant that and affirmed his confidence in believer\u2019s baptism.-It is unclear if Hubmaier was imprisoned again but soon and he and his wife flee to Nickolsburg, Moravia where begins a 15-month ministry in the church there which could be identified as an Anabaptist congregation. He wrote many tracts and articles affirming what modern Baptists believe such as believer\u2019s baptism, the local church, and its authority, free from entanglement with the state, biblical authority, believers only taking the Lord\u2019s Supper in a local congregation, and the ministry of the laity. He was also baptized as a believer the ruler of present-day Lord Leonhard of Lichtenstein.-Archduke Ferdinand sought to purge all non-Catholic churches and went after Hubmaier, particularly because of his speaking and writing against several Catholic practices.-Hubmaier and his wife were captured and imprisoned. Johanes Farber, (a Catholic theologian there), tried to convince him of his errors against Catholicism. When reason to justify heresy did not work, Hubmaier was tortured but this time did not recant his teachings and writings. -Hubmaier was condemned to die from the false state religion and is burned at the stake, standing firm this time for the Lord. -Raising his head, he called out, \u201cOh dear brothers, pray God that He will forgive me my guilt, and by this death, I will die in the Christian faith.\u201d-Hubmaier believed truth will eventually conquer error and revealed that in a poem he wrote before his martyrdom. The last lines state:With angry flame to face thy nameIn vain shall men endeavorNot for a dayThe same for ayeGod\u2019s Word stands sure forever-Three days later Hubmaier\u2019s wife was drowned in the river Danube joining her husband in martyrdom for the cause of Christ.-They both died for Baptist beliefs and the freedom to worship against state-mandated false religion. -For over 500 years Baptists continue to practice what Hubmaier was willing to die for. We should never forget that when many want to run from the Baptist name and some cases beliefs.
