Is The Asbury “Revival” A Real Revival? (slowtowrite.com)<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019ve been to more \u201crevivals\u201d than I can count. I grew up in churches where \u201crevivals\u201d were the norm, not the exception.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I actually became a Christian during a \u201crevival\u201d at a youth retreat. After a weekend of preaching, \u201cprophecies\u201d, prayers, and \u201ccasting out demons\u201d, most of the people at the youth retreat accepted the altar call, repeated the sinner\u2019s prayer, and made professions of faith in Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Within weeks, however, the vast majority of the people who professed faith in Christ had returned to unrepentant sin. So I\u2019ve seen firsthand how emphasis on \u201crevivals\u201d instead of repentance harm so many.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s with that in mind and the authority of the Bible that I hesitate to call what is happening at Asbury University a \u201crevival.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That hesitancy, however, is offensive to people who seem to think it\u2019s Satan, not God, who said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBeloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.\u201d<\/em> (1 John 4:1-2<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the past week, seemingly anyone who shares any caution or concern over some of what\u2019s happening at Asbury University is immediately labelled a \u201cPharisee\u201d, a \u201cDoubting Thomas\u201d, a blasphemer and other silly accusations by people who hypocritically attack their brothers and sisters in the name of defending brothers and sisters at Asbury University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In some ways, just as woke Christians weaponized the George Floyd incident to pressure some Christians into accepting their definition of racism\u2014some Charismatic Christians are trying to weaponize the Asbury \u201crevival\u201d to pressure others into accepting their definition of a revival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But whether it\u2019s Charismatic Christians or woke people\u2014anyone who demands only submission or silence on their opinions over debatable issues isn\u2019t operating in love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Love does not insist on it\u2019s own way. Godly people try to persuade others who disagree with them. Ungodly people, however, try to pressure others who disagree with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nevertheless, the Asbury \u201crevival\u201d started after a 10 am chapel service last week Wednesday when a group of about 20 students and the worship team said they felt prompted by the Holy Spirit to continue worship past the end of the chapel service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to one of the students I talked to, a few hours later, the president of the seminary sent an email to the students encouraging them visit the chapel to join the 20 students on what he described as an outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Apparently 200 students arrived for worship at the chapel soon after, and there has been non-stop worship ever since.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The student maintains the \u201crevival\u201d wasn\u2019t planned. But it\u2019s worth noting that Asbury University is part of what is known as the revivalist movement\u2014a group of Charismatic Christians who consistently attempt to produce revivals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is why the university\u2019s website says<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAsbury University has been known through the years for its history of great revivals. There have been several occasions when significant moves of the Holy Spirit have swept the campus and reached across the nation.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In fact, besides this current \u201crevival\u201d, Asbury claim they\u2019ve had 8 revivals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019ve talked to current students, recent graduates, and several people who\u2019ve visited the chapel to experience the \u201crevival\u201d, and there\u2019s unquestionably several reasons why we should be concerned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Though one student says the gospel has been consistently and explicitly preached since the beginning of the \u201crevival\u201d, others contradict that claim. In fact, one former student who was at the chapel this week told me he rarely, if ever, heard a clear presentation of the gospel at the school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another student said: \u201cAttending the few chapels I have at seminary, apart from one [or] two chapels that preach a biblical message of repentance, it\u2019s always been about \u2018being who you are\u2019 and God loving you \u2018as you are.\u2019 There are a lot of messages that are about being \u2018true to yourself.\u2019\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019ve watched hundreds of videos of the \u201crevival\u201d, and I still haven\u2019t seen any clips showing a clear preaching of the gospel. Of course, that isn\u2019t evidence that people aren\u2019t preaching the gospel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Still, progressive Christians like Tim Whitaker at The New Evangelicals have essentially endorsed the \u201crevival\u201d after his visits to the chapel this week. Moreover, he says<\/a> LGBTQ students at the school told him the university protects them from \u201cconversion therapy\u201d. According to Whitaker, the LGBTQ students who were \u201cworshipping\u201d at the chapel also say they\u2019re especially hopeful the \u201crevival\u201d will create (progressive) change at the school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That lines up with what one student said to me: \u201cUnfortunately, I have first-account experience and conversations with people who are attending and speaking on the \u2018greatness\u2019 of revival who are actively living in sin (to be blunt).\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Furthermore, some of the preachers at the chapel are women. And there are also several people \u201cprophesying\u201d, speaking in tongues, \u201ccasting out demons\u201d, and \u201cfaith healing\u201d at the chapel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So with that said, is the Asbury \u201crevival\u201d a real revival? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because of the seemingly little or no gospel preaching, the female pastors, the disorderly and charismatic chaos, I\u2019m inclined to say, \u201cno\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But in a sense, whether I think it\u2019s a revival or not that doesn\u2019t really matter, anyway. The word \u201crevival\u201d isn\u2019t a biblical term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
