“The Saddest Statement in the Book of God”
“And they all forsook him, and fled.” Mark 14:50
Judas kissed Him and called Christ-Master. The Jewish
mob (Josephus said it amounted to six hundred men!) with
torches in their hands and mayhem in their hearts, ” … laid their
hands on him and took him.” (vs. 46). Peter cut Malchus’ ear
off, Jesus queried them about the timing of the arrest and one
young man fled naked from the scene (vss. 49-52).
Our sad verse today records the disgraceful truth, that all
His friends forsook Christ and fled like the cowards they were.
In contrast, the shepherds and wiseman at the birth of Christ,
and as a young child, (Matt. 2:11) sought Him. The shepherds
of the fields and the wisemen from afar, came by faith, seeking
the promised Messiah. The shepherds followed heavenly
singing and the wisemen a traveling star that brought them to
the Saviour, in spite of Herod’s impending wrath (cf. Matt.
2:16).
Yes, the shepherds and wisemen had seen an unearthly
phenomenon, but look what His forsaking friends had
observed: the dead raised, the blind given sight, lame men
leaping, deaf hearing, mute men speaking, thousands fed and
on and on, to the point John wrote that the libraries of the world
could not hold the books that should be written about Him (cf.
John 21:25).
My question today is, “Where are you in regard to Jesus
Christ? Are you trusting and testifying or denying and
disgracing Him with your life and lips?” -T.G.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
