Brown, Rev. Joseph, was born in Wickford, R. I. His early life was spent on the farm and in one of the woolen-mills belonging to his father. By private study he fitted himself for the. Fresh- man class at Yale. He completed the course, graduating with special honor in a class of ninety. In 1844 he returned to Yale and took his second degree. A few years later he taught in the Pitts- burgh Female Seminary. Under the auspices of the Ohio Baptist State Convention he organized a church at Gallipolis and was then ordained. He spent ten years as pastor of the First Baptist church of Springfield, O., and during the time completed a theological course in Wittenberg Col- lege of the same city. In 1860 he became pastor of the Baptist church in Terre Haute, Ind. In 1870 he moved to Indianapolis, and soon entered upon the duties of corresponding secretary for the Indiana Baptist State Convention, and served for five years, when failing health obliged him to re- sign. He was a truly modest man, a preacher of decided ability, and a faithful servant of his Mas- ter. His illness was protracted. He expressed a wish that he might die on Sunday. The Lord called him Sunday, Aug. 11, 1878. He left $1000 to the Indiana Baptist State Convention.
