The Christian Abuser is a book that represents Pastor Goodell’s sixty-five years of counseling with the wives of leaders in the Independent Baptist Community.   In over 3,000 counseling sessions, he has sought to help wives of Baptist leaders deal with the abusiveness of their husbands, justifying the abuse by taking out of context Paul’s teaching about “the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church.”Read about the following:

Upon graduation from high school, he served in the United States Air Force, working with the Chaplains in providing voluntary Bible studies in the barracks. While in Colorado, he earned the A.A. equivalent from the College of the Air Force, majoring in radar technology.
In 1960, he enrolled at Tennessee Temple University to prepare for expanded ministry, finishing his tour of military duty in the Air Force Reserve in Chattanooga, Tennessee. After completing the B.A. degree, Guy and his family moved to Texas where he attended Dallas Theological Seminary in the fall and spring, studying at North Texas State University in the summers. Guy completed the M.A. in English at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville and the Ph.D. in Christian Counseling at Landmark Baptist College. He did additional post-graduate studies at the University of Kentucky, Kentucky State University, Carson-Newman University, and the State University of New York.
As a pastor, Guy established The Strength for Living Counseling Center fifty years ago and integrated counseling into his pastoral ministry. He has served as a counselor and as the trainer of counselors for fifty years, working with judges, police, emergency medical personnel, pastors, evangelists, missionaries, and their respective families. Under the Reagan Administration, Guy was one of three hundred pastors who met with the President and accepted the responsibility of smuggling millions of Bibles into the Soviet Union. Guy worked with Dr. Bob Billings, a staff member of President Reagan, and incorporated \u201cBibles for Russia\u201d for purposes of raising funds for printing the Bible in the Russian language. Guy still operates Bibles for Russia, helping develop ministries, serve pastors, and promote youth camps in Russia and former Soviet states. He helped establish Bible Schools in Russia, the Ukraine, and Romania. He was co-founder of The Seminary of the Yurals, where he also taught counseling for younger Russian pastors.He presently serves as pastor of Greater Glens Falls Bible Baptist Church and president of the Baptist Academy and College program, which reaches out to local pastors and offers training in Biblical counseling.

Sexual Abuse in Independent Baptist Churches – The Hurt, the Heartache and the Harm. (swordofthelord.com)<\/a>
Although I have addressed the issue of sexual scandal twice in the past year I feel that it is important that I do so again.<\/strong>
In early December the Fort Worth Star-Telegram issued a four-part series of articles entitled, \u201cHundreds of Sex Abuse Allegations Found in Fundamental Baptist Churches Across U. S.\u201d<\/strong><\/strong>Since the <\/strong>#MeToo<\/a> movement began rolling, there has been an unending string of sordid stories hit the news. Scores of network executives, political figures, business tycoons, and Hollywood celebrities have been confronted with major accusations of a sexual nature. Some were forced out of their position. Others have stepped aside in the midst of the furor.<\/strong><\/strong>The sexual abuse scandals in the Roman Catholic church have been unfolding for a number of years. Many hundreds of priests have been accused and charged with their misdeeds.<\/strong><\/strong>Now the Fort Worth Star-Telegram has done an expos\u00e9 on Independent Baptists in which they cited over 400 cases of moral failure and in a number of cases in which crimes were committed, allegedly perpetrated by someone in the leadership of an Independent Baptist Church. They also allege that there have been cover-ups and the shuffling of guilty pastors to another church even when it was known that they were guilty of sexual misconduct.<\/strong><\/strong>Earlier this week (December 12) the evangelical publication Christianity Today called and asked me to comment on the charges being made against Independent Fundamental Baptists. I agreed to the interview without hesitation. The reporter was very fair and quoted me precisely.<\/strong><\/strong>This expose has created quite a stir in our circles and has also made national headlines, but I want it to be clear. Those allegations have not escaped our notice through the years.<\/strong><\/strong>In the last year I have written two articles. The first one was entitled \u201cHarassment and Abuse Scandals\u201d and was published in the December 29, 2017 issue of the Sword of the Lord.<\/strong><\/strong>The second one was entitled, \u201cHow to Respond Properly to Scandalous Allegations\u201d and was published in the June 15, 2018 issue of the Sword of the Lord.<\/strong><\/strong>Both articles are available in their entirety at <\/strong>swordofthelord.com<\/a>.<\/strong><\/strong>Since the national headlines broke this month some folks seem to think we have been silent about the issues of sexual abuse. We have not been silent and we will not now be silent.<\/strong><\/strong>Although it may be partially repetitious from my previous articles, let me make a few salient observations.<\/strong><\/strong>(1) Cover-up Is Never an Acceptable Reaction!<\/strong>\u201cThem that sin rebuke before all, that others also may fear.\u201d (I Tim. 5:20).<\/strong><\/strong>When accusations are made, you can\u2019t just sweep it under the rug and forget it. If the accusation is something illegal (sexual contact with children, embezzlement, etc.) the authorities must be called. If it is not illegal (moral infidelity), church officials must still deal with it. Maintaining the integrity of a church\u2019s ministry must be a daily priority. Anything that threatens that integrity must be addressed fully and promptly.<\/strong><\/strong>(2) The Law of the Land Requires That All Alleged Incidents of a Criminal Nature Must Be Reported to The Authorities!<\/strong>This simply must be done. There are no excuses for not doing this as the law requires. Anyone who ignores the law will (and should) have to face the consequences of their actions. When things go wrong we should always do right. Every time, all the time, just do right.<\/strong>
Whether it is popular or not, we should do our very best to do right.<\/strong><\/strong>(3) Accusations Must Be Verified!<\/strong>\u201cAgainst an elder receive not an accusation, but before two or three witnesses.\u201d (I Tim. 19).<\/strong><\/strong>If you think every accusation is true, you are not living in the real world. Lying is pandemic in today\u2019s world. Some accusations are conceived in hate, revenge or out of retaliation, and are not true.<\/strong><\/strong>Consequently, accusations must be vetted either by multiple witnesses or some other physical evidence.<\/strong><\/strong>When the situation is a \u201che said, she said\u201d dilemma, establishing the actual facts can be very difficult and in some cases impossible.<\/strong><\/strong>Invariably some will presume guilt and others will presume innocence. As a result, the yelling back and forth gets out of hand.<\/strong><\/strong>(4) \u201cPresumption of Innocence\u201d is a constitutionally protected right here in America.<\/strong>Everyone charged with a criminal offence has the right to be presumed innocent until proved guilty according to law in a public trial in which he has had all the guarantees necessary for his defense.<\/strong><\/strong>We simply cannot abandon this fundamental principal in our juris prudence system. Our founding fathers were wise to include this provision and it should not be forgotten in our struggles today.<\/strong><\/strong>(5) \u201cPresumption of Guilt\u201d has Become Standard Fare.<\/strong>When an accusation is made these days, it has become pretty typical for most people to assume the accusations are legitimate and that the accuser has been vetted. Often the accused are guilty, but not always. Assuming that guilt and accusations are one and the same is not a good premise.<\/strong><\/strong>(6) Accusers Must Be Heard Without Prejudice!<\/strong>Accusations do not constitute guilt for the accused, but the accuser\u2019s claim must be handled promptly and seriously. The alleged victim must be shielded from the alleged perpetrator.<\/strong><\/strong>When you are in a position of leadership you must simultaneously defend the right of the accuser and the rights of the accused.<\/strong><\/strong>If you are the one who makes the charge of sexual abuse, you deserve to be heard, protected and helped (without any delay).<\/strong><\/strong>(7) Onlookers Adopt Conclusions Without Necessary Facts.<\/strong>Hearsay and rumor, do not constitute a substantiation of the accusations. If something illegal or immoral is alleged, it is unwise to make comments and take sides until the facts are established. Those in positions of responsibility must take the appropriate actions, but those who do not have detailed knowledge of the facts should wait just a bit before declaring themselves to be experts on the case. If you are not privy to all the facts, holding your tongue is a wise response.<\/strong><\/strong>(8) If You Were the One Innocently Accused, You Would Want the Privilege to Defend Yourself.<\/strong>We must not forget in any circumstance that \u201cWhatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.\u201d (Matt. 7:12).<\/strong><\/strong>(9) If You Are Found Guilty, You Deserve Exactly What the Law Requires.<\/strong>There is no excuse, no rationale which can justify sexual sin. If a person has abused a child or taken advantage of their leadership position to do something like this, they should face the full consequences of the law.<\/strong><\/strong>The fact is\u2014the list of men who were pastors, youth pastors and laymen who are or have been in prison is a considerably long list.<\/strong><\/strong>(10) If You Are Found Innocent, You Deserve to be Treated with Respect.\u201d<\/strong>This is a part of the picture that gets very little attention. When someone is falsely accused, they never fully recover from the damage done to their name and reputation. Some onlookers refuse to believe anything other than the alleged victim\u2019s accusations without regard for the facts that prove otherwise.<\/strong><\/strong>If accusations are proven to be false, once again the full weight of the law should be brought to bear on the person who perpetrated the fraud.<\/strong><\/strong>Conclusions<\/strong>Where a person, male or female, is sexually violated, the hurt and the heartache brings significant, long-term harm to the person.<\/strong><\/strong>For people, men or women, to use a platform of leadership, whether it be religious or secular, to effect a criminal act is unconscionable and must be addressed strongly.<\/strong><\/strong>To say that all of the cases named in the Star-Telegram report are just now coming to light is totally untrue. Many of the ones named are either in prison or have been forced out of their positions. A few of them have been vindicated and are still grappling to regain their tarnished reputation.<\/strong><\/strong>No doubt the handling of some of these situations was clumsy, ill-advised and in some few cases even illegal. But in recent years our churches have been better advised. The Christian legal ministries have assisted most Independent Baptist churches in the handling of these serious issues. Any attempt to cover up on these grave issues is totally unacceptable. Most churches and ministries I know that and consequently that is much less likely to occur now than might have been the case in earlier years.<\/strong><\/strong>If you are an abuse victim, you deserve the compassionate care and support of all of us. We cannot erase the past, but we can be available to help you in whatever way you may need us.<\/strong>

 Physical and emotional abuse of wives and woman in general (and to a lesser degree, of men) occurs in the Christian community, as in all others. There is minimal precise data on this phenomenon because many victims in such circumstances are frightened or ashamed to speak out about it.  Yet, God is very obvious about his reaction to spousal abuse.
\u200b\u200bGod is no respecter of persons (Acts 10:34).  When ministers counsel quick reconciliation in marriages ravaged by abuse, the Lord says, \u201cThey have healed also the hurt of the daughter of my people slightly, saying, Peace, peace; when there is no peace.\u201d (Jer. 6:14,). The essential communication an abuser should experience from the minister of Christ is that the eternal wrath of the Lord burns hot against those who heap up violence and oppression. Their abuse has not escaped the watchful eye of the One who declares, \u201cVengeance is mine, I will repay\u201d (Rom. 12:19,). The first step in putting God\u2019s justice on full display is getting the proper authorities involved.  The most unloving thing a minister could do in a situation of abuse is to dampen the severity of God’s retribution by offering false grace. Perhaps God will bring true repentance in the life of an abuser. But it will never happen until he stands condemned in his sin before the burning anger of the eternal Creator. Then and only then is he ready to receive forgiveness at the Cross.  Simply put; God has ZERO tolerance for spousal abuse.
\u200bThe essential message an abused woman should hear from a minister of Christ is that the Lord is the protector of the weak. The Word of God unequivocally calls a vulnerable woman to the safety of Jesus Christ: “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest..” We make that safety tangible by surrounding a victim with advocates, counselors, and resources to help her make the difficult choices that lay ahead.God’s Response To Spousal Abuse<\/strong>
\u200b\u200b<\/strong>We see throughout the Bible that God is not passive about violence committed against women. God acts decisively and compassionately through Jesus Christ to call all people to love mercy, act justly, and nurture healing and justice for everyone\u2014most especially when power is used to harm others. The God of the Bible, then, is one who honestly tells the story of women who are abused\u2014such as the rape of Tamar (2 Sam. 13)\u2014not to justify violence, but to tell the truth that when men abuse women, God sees it and God\u2019s heart breaks for the abused. God acts clearly through the life and death of Jesus to take an ultimate stance against all forms of violence, oppression, marginalization, and abuse, declaring that \u2018God is love\u2019 and God\u2019s love will not stand passively or silently when women are abused (1 John 4:8).by permission

We never see the word \u2018abuse\u2019 in the Bible, but the term \u2018oppression\u2019 (meaning crushing or burdening someone by the abuse of power or authority) is everywhere. The Psalms in particular portray oppression in a manner that echoes the way abuse survivors describe their abuser: time and again violence and abuse is associated with wickedness and condemned as \u201cdetestable to the Lord\u201d (Psalm 11, Proverbs 3 & 10).\u200b
It could not be more obvious that God hates violence and abuse within families and society as a whole. Loving justice and acting justly means refusing to tolerate abuse, exposing it (Ephesians 5:11-13) and stopping it. It is also vital that local authorities punish those who commit offences. Many acts of domestic and family violence are against the law. We can and should embrace the God-given authorities of human government and law enforcement to stop abuse and bring perpetrators to justice (Romans 13, 1 Peter 2, Acts 23:12-22).  It is when God’s judgement is on full display and weighed on one’s heart; repentance from sin and faith in Christ is most compelling and likely to be accepted by the offender.Sincerely, Dr. Arthur Belanger
