Short answer: The vast majority of \u201cChristendom\u201d is a masquerade and built by the father of lies. (John 8:44). When satan could not defeat Christ, vanquish his Holy Scripture or martyr all Christ\u2019 disciples \u2018ol Beelzebub created a counterfeit church. By studying Baptist history we can identify the New Testament church that Christ built during his earthly ministry.<\/strong>Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, who cannot lie (Titus 1:2) promised the perpetuity of his church (Mt.16:18) to which he founded and built upon the foundation of the Apostles of which he was the Chief cornerstone (Eph. 2:20)<\/strong>
Church by definition is a “called out local assembly” (ekklesia) of baptized (immersion) believers who are organized to preach the Gospel to the lost, and teach\/make disciples of all professed and baptized members. It has officers and elders as described in Eph. 4:11, 1 Tim 3:1,10; 5:17; 1 Peter 5:1,5 and has the Lord’s table (Mt. 26:28-30; I Cor. 12:23-29) & Baptism (Mt. 3:13-17; 28:19-20; I Cor. 12:13) as the only two visible ordinances and an autonomous Biblical theocentric church governance (Col. 1:18, Eph. 3:21, I Cor. 1:3;12:12).<\/strong>
Scriptural baptism \u2013 the authority, subject, method and purpose has separated the true NT church from pseudo church organizations since the days of Romish apostasy. Countless millions of our Baptist forefathers have been martyred (many by professing \u201cChristians\u201d) for \u201cthe faith which was once delivered unto the saints.\u201d (Jude 1:3)<\/strong>
For this purpose NT churches are founded under the ordaining authority of NT churches (Acts 13:1-3, Heb. 6:1-2). When individuals start a church & baptize w\/o authority they are operating by means of the earliest doctrinal divisions in Christendom. Their doctrine will ultimately reveal an invisible, universal church synonymous with salvation. (Folks who believe the body of Christ is composed of all the saved & who believe the “true church” is the realm of salvation to which they are Spirit baptized into this universal body of Christ) Thus their baptism depicts their doctrinal root that is tied to the great whore (RCC) and her daughters (Protestants) of a federal church\/state. We find many Baptists have traded the apostolic faith for the deluding influence of ecumenical, Protestant fundamentalism particularly evident since the Niagara Conferences of the 1890\u2019s and early 1900\u2019s of which the protestant Scofield gained much influence among unsuspecting Baptists. Since baptism was not considered a \u201cfundamental” of the faith it was effectively marginalized and therefore \u201cProtestantized\u201d.<\/strong>
We see from Christ’s example that baptism is not simply a matter of immersion. It is a matter of God-ordained authority. Jesus Christ identified with John in receiving his God-ordained baptism (John 1:6, Mt.3:15-16). It was that same baptism that He gave to His disciples, who baptized under His authority (Jn. 4: 1-2, Mt.28:19-20). We have external evidence that the Lord’s church practiced this ordinance from the early part of His earthly ministry. The commission came with a promise of an empowerment (Acts 1:8) on the day of Pentecost.<\/strong>
The preaching of the word on that day resulted in 3k souls being saved & then “ADDED UNTO” the Lord’s church by means of baptism (Acts 2:41).<\/strong>Many peoples in history have held to the Biblical doctrines delivered by Christ and his first church and are recognized throughout history as the Waldenses, Donatists, Novations, Albigenses, Henricians, Petrobrussians, Paulicians, Anabaptists and Baptist.<\/strong>
It is incumbent upon us not only to publish our history, heritage and distinctives as a beacon of light for every generation to follow but to honor those folks who have sacrificed their life and treasure for the cause of Christ and his kingdom.<\/strong>To God be the glory!<\/strong>Thomas E. John, was born at Elstow, Eng-land, about a mile from Bedford, in 1628, Hisfather was a man of more intelligence than thosewho generally followed his calling, and he had Johntaught to read and write. When the little boy wasten years of age he first became conscious that hewas very sinful. He speedily shook off these fears.He was \u2018\u2018 drawn out\u201d in 1645, with others, at thesiege of Leicester to perform sentinel\u2019s duty beforethe city, when another member of his company ex-pressed a desire to take his place; the request wasgranted, and that night Bunyan\u2019s substitute wasshot in the head and died. \u2018his deliverance pro-duced a powerful impression upon Bunyan.Soon after he left the army he married, and hiswife and he were so poor that they had neither a\u2018*dish nor a spoon.\u201dHis first permanent conviction of sin was pro-duced by a sermon denouncing the violation of theLord\u2019s day by labor, sports, or otherwise. Thiscame home to Bunyan with peculiar force, for hisgreatest enjoyment came from sports on the Lord\u2019sday.A long while after this, Bunyan, in passingthrough the streets of Bedford, heard \u201cthree orfour poor women,\u201d sitting at a door, \u201ctalkingabout the new birth, the work of God in theirhearts, and the way by which they were convincedof their miserable state by nature. They told howGod had visited their souls with his loye in ChristJesus, and with what words and promises theyhad been refreshed, comforted, and supportedagainst the temptations of the devil; moreover,they reasoned of the suggestions and temptationsof Satan in particular.\u201d From these women Bun-yan learned to loathe sin and to hunger for theSaviour. He sought their company again andagain, and he was strengthened to go to Jesus.One day, as he was passing into the fields, he says,\u201cThis sentence fell upon my soul, \u2018 Thy righteous-ness is in heaven.\u2019 I also saw that it was not mygood frame of heart that made my righteousnessbetter, nor yet my bad frame that made my right-eousness worse, for my righteousness was JesusChrist himself, the same yesterday, to-day, andforever.\u2019\u2019 Then, as he says, \u2018his chains fell off,\u201dand he went home rejoicing. In 1655, Mr. Bun-yan was immersed by the Rey. John Gifford, ofBedford. The same year he was called to preachJohn was arrested Noy. 12, 1660, and he wasin jail more than twelve years. His imprisonmentwas peculiarly trying. \u201cThe parting with mywife and poor children,\u201d says Bunyan, \u201chathoften been to me, in this place (the prison), likepulling the flesh from my bones.\u201d And of hisblind daughter he adds, \u201c Poor child, what sorrowthou art like to have for thy portion in this world!Thou must be beaten, must beg, suffer hunger,cold, nakedness, and a thousand calamities, thoughI cannot now endure the wind should blow uponthee.\u201d \u201cThe Pilgrim\u2019s Progress\u2019\u2019 was written inBedford jail.During Bunyan\u2019s lifetime there were 100,000copies of that book circulated in the British islands,besides which there were several editions in NorthAmerica. And in the ten years which Bunyanlived, after his wonderful book was first issued, itwas translated into French, Flemish, Dutch, Welsh,Gaelic, and Irish. Since Bunyan\u2019s death it hasbeen translated into Hebrew for Christian Jews inJerusalem, and into Spanish, Portuguese, Italian,Danish, German, Armenian, Burmese, Singhalese,Orissa, Hindostanee, Bengalee, Tamil, Maratthi,Canarese, Gujaratti, Malay, Arabic, Samoan, Ta-hitian, Pihuana, Bechuana, Malagasy, New Zea-land, and Latin. This list of translations endswith 1847. Since that time it has been renderedinto several additional tongues of our race. Norwill \u201cThe Pilgrim\u2019s Progress\u201d stop in its travelsuntil it visits every land occupied by human beings,and tells its blessed story in the language of allnations.There is a French Roman Catholic version of\u201cThe Pilgrim\u2019s Progress,\u201d\u2019 greatly abridged, withthe head of the Virgin on the title-page. It leavesout giant Pope and the statement that Peter wasafraid of a sorry girl. An English ritualistic cler-gyman has tried to adapt it to the sacramental jug-glery of his system. Of Bunyan\u2019s \u201c Holy War\u201dLord Macaulay says, \u2018\u2018If \u2018The Pilgrim\u2019s Progress\u2019did not exist it would be the best allegory thatever was written ;\u2019\u2019 and he proclaims \u2018\u201c\u2018 John Bun-yan the most popular religious writer in the Englishlanguage.\u201dThe pardon which secured Bunyan\u2019s releasefrom prison was ordered by the Privy Council,presided over by the king, May 17, 1672. Afterhis liberation he became the most popular preacherin England ; 3000 persons gathered to hear him inLondon before breakfast. Men of all ranks andof all grades of intelligence listened to his burningwords, and heralded the fame of his eloquence tothe king. The learned Dr. John Owen told CharlesII. that he would relinquish all his learning forthe tinker\u2019s preaching abilities.While Bunyan was journeying upon an errandof mercy he was exposed to a heavy rain, whichbrought on a violent fever, from the effect of whichhe died in ten days, in London, Aug. 12,1688. Hislast hours were full of peace. He was buried inBunhill Fields Cemetery, where his monument isstill seen.Bunyan\u2019s church, now of the Congregationaldenomination, is still in Bedford. His chair is inthe meeting-house, and some other relics of theimmortal dreamer. Freedom from State-Mandated ReligionA free church in a free state was the only settlement the Anabaptists would settle for in their beliefs. They were the recipients of oppression, persecution, and martyrdom by both of these groups.The state-mandated church dictated what type of faith you would have. They sealed the religious fate of everyone through infant baptism, a pre-requisite for citizenship.The hypocrisy of the state controlling religion raised its ugly head when Felix Manz drowned at the urging of Protestant reformer Ulrich Zwingli. Catholics in Austria and Germany burned Michael Sattler and Balthasar Hubmier at the stake.Baptists chased and saw their worship services were forbidden.This problem straightened out in the first amendment of our Constitution is still tenuous. Before the Constitution, provincial churches were favored, and Baptists were denied freedom in several established colonies.Today we still have to remain vigilant because we are dealing with a biblical illiterate populace that does not understand or, in many cases, care about the struggle for religious liberty in our country, which the Baptists spearheaded. Many would insist this freedom only be allowed in church buildings. Communist Russia believed the same thing. We are free to practice our faith; no one should be able officially or unofficially restrict our beliefs and practices everywhere we go.The state-enforced religion is the bane of Scriptural truth. But state heads often enforced false doctrine to protect the power-hungry state religion at the apex of controlling peoples\u2019 consciences and freedoms. It was needful to execute state religion because their beliefs were indefensible. An open Bible would disprove many of these practices. Hence the suppression of the Bible creates a biblically illiterate citizenry.Emer Canier reveals how this arrangement worked with the state religion protecting and enforcing false doctrine. He said, \u201cThe very reason for error\u2019s defense and enforcement was that it was indefensible. No wonder it will take an oppressive state church partnership to uphold doctrines that would otherwise be indefensible.\u201d You can\u2019t defend false doctrine by the Bible, so rulers defended whatever the state religion taught and restricted biblical truth and Baptist beliefs.Our faith was fought for through a long struggle. It grieves me when many do not appreciate our Baptist identity and walk away from it. How can we do so when our religious freedom is bought through blood and oppression? Think of that the next time one says it doesn\u2019t matter what you believe as long as you say we are Christian. God will reward those who keep His word and do not succumb to false religion supported by the state and used by the devil to bring many to Hell. May we remain true to God\u2019s truth through Baptists and all we have stood for?
